PETER MACKEY Obituary

Peter Edmonds Mackey, 41, of Kansas City, Kansas, devoted husband and loving son, passed away at his home on May 8, 2014 of an apparent heart attack. A Celebration of Peter's Life will be held on Friday, May 30 at Visitation Catholic Church located at 51st and Main Street in Kansas City, Missouri. The Service will begin at 4:00 pm and will be followed by a visitation at the church. Peter was born on June 13, 1972 in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended Westwood View Elementary School, Indian Hills Junior High School, and Shawnee Mission East High School. He was a loyal Gorilla of Pittsburg State University. Peter spent many happy years at Camp Lincoln in Minnesota as a camper and later a counselor. After college, Peter worked in the food service industry. As a graduate of the Kauffman Entrepreneurship Training program, he founded The Crave Cafe in Kansas City. He loved the coffee shop, the neighborhood, and all his customers. His nieces loved his chocolate shakes. As an employee of KU Medical Center, Peter proudly served as a steward and Executive Board Member for LiUNA Local Union 1290PE. In 2012 Peter married the true love of his life, Dawn Mackey. Peter loved barbecue, fly-fishing at Rockbridge, MO, the K.C. Chiefs, and helping to spay/neuter, adopt and care for feral cats. But above all he loved his family. He was a friend to strangers and an advocate for all, except perhaps for an occasional Raiders fan. Peter is survived by his wife, Dawn Mackey, of the home; his parents, Susan and Bud Mackey of Kansas City; his sister Laura Urquidez, her husband Chris, and four nieces: Merrill, AnnaHelen, Mae, and Daphne, all of Santa Barbara, California; and aunts, uncles, and cousins. Peter will be missed by all who knew him, but most of all his family. He leaves a hole in our hearts. Peter was truly our rock. Memorial contributions may be made to Spay & Neuter Kansas City, (816) 353-0940 http://snkc.net or a charity of your choice.

I didn't get the pleasure of meeting Peter, but I do know his fabulous wife. I saw how her eyes lit up while speaking of him and knew of the close friendship and love they shared. My heart goes out to all of Pete's friends and family.

I met Pete at KU Med where we both worked. He always had a smile for everyone and showed great compassion to all. In the time I knew him and visited (almost daily) I never knew we shared a love of Camp. I went to Lake Hubert across the lake from Lincoln. I retired in January from KU Med and just heard of his passing. My condolences to all his family. He was a friend to me and so many others at the Hospital.

I hadn't seen Pete in over 15 years, I gave him the goofy nickname of "Drunky Pete" because of his laidback,Midwestern drawl, and sometimes his attire. I worked security with him at The Hurricane, and have nothing but fond memories of him. I trusted him.he trusted me. I'm so very sorry to hear of his passing...Far too young...
