STEVEN D. BLUNK

1960 - 2015

STEVEN BLUNK Obituary

Steven D. Blunk, 55, Boulder, CO passed peacefully December 17, 2015 at his home of complications from Parkinson's Disease. He was born August 10, 1960 in Denver, CO to Marilyn and Donald Blunk. Raised in Lincoln, NE and Gladstone, MO, he graduated from NKC High School in 1978. He studied music at Park University and UMKC, after which he completed an Associate Degree in Electronics Technology. Steve moved to Boulder, CO in the early 1980s and was active in the Shamhbala Center for a number of years. He had recently completed 20 years as an Engineering Technician at Droplet Measurement Technologies. His love of music was a life-long pursuit. A fine classical guitarist, he also composed and arranged music, and actively supported the Boulder Guitar Society. Steve had a deep love of nature and animals. He beloved corgi, Angus McTeezle, passed the day after Steve. Steve would want us to remember him playing his beautiful Taylor guitar, reading some Neil Gaiman, admiring a sunset in Hawaii, and dancing cheek to cheek with Cheryl. His kind and sincere presence will be missed. Preceded in death by his father, Donald, he is survived by his partner, Cheryl Barnes, mother, Marilyn Blunk, sisters, Carol Blunk and Cathy Blunk, and brother-in-law Joseph Pakovits. As per his wishes Steve was cremated and his memorial service will be held later in Colorado. Donations may be made to Gary Sokol's Parkinson's Network in Boulder, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, or the charity of your choice.

I didn't know Mr. Blunk. I looked his name up after buying a record at a used record shop that was stamped, "From the Library of Steve Blunk." It was a copy of Andy Sommers and Robert Fripp's I Advanced Mask. I am wondering if this is the same man. Either way, Steven D. Blunk seemed like a lucky man who loved music, life, and the people who loved him. I extend my condolences to those who are still grieving your loss and celebrating his life.

I learned of Steve's death when Cheryl contacted me today after finding me through the internet. I was glad to read that he continued to play the guitar. I will always think of him sitting in the music library in the basement of the chapel at Park College in 1978, playing records, and talking music, music, music. Perhaps he's there now in some other dimension.

The times I played music with Steve are treasured memories in my heart. A dear and sweet man, his gentle smile and beautiful guitar playing will be greatly missed. Farewell, my friend--my heart is happy that Angus is at your side as you journey into the light!

Two of my favorite memories of Steve are: 1) Years and years ago how he would occasionally play music for the PHC church services. It added even more beauty and a fuller experience to an already nourishing service.

The second is more recent. I had the honor of staying with Steve one evening as respite care so Cheryl could get a few hours of sleep. After Steve had gotten all arranged in bed I massaged his hands and feet with essential oils and he fell peacefully asleep during the process. Before he fell asleep we had the chance to visit, to connect and to laugh at some of life's challenges and absurdities and beauties.
