Brian Chang Obituary

Brian Chang
Born: July 22, 1971
Died: May 10, 2024
Brian Chang – devoted husband, and loving father, respected physician – passed away on May 10, 2024 and went to be with his Heavenly Father. His legacy leaves an indelible mark on his family, friends, and the medical community.
Brian was born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama, the son of the late Dr. Ki Joon (Lucas) Chang and Youn Bok (Helen) Chang. Beloved and devoted husband of Kelly Wilson Chang. Loving father of Julia and Nicholas. Cherished brother of Anne Lanteigne and Hay Wun Wain. Adored uncle of Amy Lanteigne, Nicole Wain, Ashley Wain Hoppe, and Catharine Wain. Beloved son-in-law of Kevin and Ann Wilson.
Brian earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with distinction from Brown University in 1992. He then went on to earn his MD/PhD from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 2000. Following graduation from medical school, Brian completed his medical residency in anatomic and clinical Pathology through Harvard University at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He spent an additional year there as a cytopathology fellow. While in Boston, Brian met Kelly through a shared love for swing dancing.
In 2005, Brian joined Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital, where he served as a pathologist for nearly two decades. He became the managing partner of the practice and served as medical director of pathology. His tenure at Delnor was marked by his exceptional clinical acumen and his commitment to diagnostic accuracy. Beyond his technical skills in pathology, Brian imbued compassion and empathy into his professional work. Brian's colleagues and peers alike relied on him for his expertise, professionalism, integrity, and dedication to the medical profession.
Brian loved his family activities, particularly spending time with Kelly. Brian was a wonderful, caring husband and father. He loved nurturing his children, Julia and Nicholas. It was clear that whatever the children were doing, he was immensely proud of them. He was always a steadfast supporter of their varied endeavors. As a family they simply treasured time together.
He will be missed by all those fortunate enough to have known and loved him.
A memorial service to celebrate Brian's life and legacy will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine Brian Chang Scholarship Fund: bit.ly/4aq5zz4.
Rest in peace, Brian! We love you and cherish every minute we spent with you.

Back in 2015 Brian called me to offer me my first job as a pathologist out of fellowship. Working with Brian played an essential role in setting me up for success for the rest of my career. Brian was an excellent pathologist, a good man and a good friend. I will always be grateful for all he did for me, and I will always remember him. I am so sad to hear about his passing. His family has my sympathy.

Brian was a friend from our days as freshman in college. He was always quick to smile and laugh. Always finding an interesting take on life. Certain memories stick out in particular. He loved to mention he bought Apple stock when we were sitting around the Ratty guessing at what we were eating. And he nicknamed our mutual academic friend "Jungle Al"...for no particular reason I can imagine...after they played a round of "hoops". When he started his PH.d/M.D. program...i recall him jokingly saying the other medical students were "suckers" because he was paid to study instead of having to pay to study like them. He always brought a smile to our faces. Brian, you will be very missed.
