I worked in Dr. Hoppers lab from 1976-1979 and remember him as a calm, alert and gentle soul who was well organized and generous with his time, knowledge, encouragement and support. I learned lab skills from him that are relevant to this day. He understood different personalities and was very good with language. This allowed him to nurture relationships between coworkers in a way that is rare and valuable. In those days, he was an avid tennis player and blood donor. I remember he was proud that Maia had worked on the Viking mission. She and the kids sometimes visited the lab, especially Jeff. I am sorry for your loss.
The last time I saw Dr. Hopper in 1979, he was laughing. He drove my coworker Tom and me to a farewell thank-you lunch in Bridgeport in a beater car he kept in a garage downtown. That car was always getting vandalized, and it was missing the rear windshield on that day. I was in the backseat. Between his unusual driving style of frequent accelerations, and a pounding rainstorm, I was getting drenched, all the while assuring him I was fine. He found this hilarious, and it was. May he rest in a well earned peace.
