Alan Walter Schilling
Born: October 6, 1941
Died: May 28, 2025
Alan Walter Schilling, age 83, of Sandwich, IL, passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 6, 1941, in Arlington Heights, IL, the son of Walter and Dorothy (Petersen) Schilling.
Alan was united in marriage on September 18, 1965 to Margaret Forsyth, and they spent nearly 60 years happily together. They had many grand adventures, whether it was to Wisconsin Dells, or all the way to the Jersey Shore with their kids and in-laws all packed in the old green station wagon. In their later years, Al and Marge had many laughs with the grandkids while camping in the RV or having the gang for sleepovers. Some of the best memories were just the simple Sunday drives together enjoying the company of each other.
Al was born with a love for learning, which led him to DeVry University, where he earned his degree as a biomedical engineer. After a number of years in this field, he dared to go into business and became a co-owner of Source Seven Services. This endeavor led him to many hours servicing medical nuclear medicine machines around the Chicago area up until his retirement. One of Al's greatest passions was working with robotics. Many times Al's family was summoned down to his workshop to enjoy the latest robot as it lit up and blinked its big eyes or shook your hand. He had an inventor's imagination and a tinkerer's heart. Al was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. He was quiet, kind, devoted to his family and loved them all unconditionally. He enjoyed a good laugh, an intriguing book, his robots, outer space, wood carving and an occasional bloody mary. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
During the final years of life, although he was suffering from a rare neurodegenerative disorder, he never complained and always thanked those that helped him. He set an example of how to treat others in times of personal suffering and it was our honor to be able to care for him at home until the very end. Al and his family have great appreciation for the care that was provided to him by Nicole from DMJ Home Health and Christine of First Health Hospice. In addition to these caregivers, Al's family would like to thank family friend Nicole Bezroukoff for her unequivocal compassion and love in caring for Al during his final months. It is not often in life that we are fortunate to find someone willing to give so freely from their heart. May these blessings come back to her many times over.
Alan is survived by his wife, Margaret Schilling of Sandwich, IL; his children, Timothy Schilling of Earlville, IL, Theresa (Joseph) Morar of Big Rock, IL and Tina (Don) Altman of Sandwich, IL; his eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his brothers-in-law, Richard Miller of PA, and James Forsyth of Sycamore, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Dorothy Schilling; and his sister, Ruth Miller.
