Catherine DAVIDSON Obituary

DAVIDSON Catherine H, 96, died on Tue, March 8, 2011 after long illness. Catherine was the daughter of Frank E. and Florence Large Harr, Stanwood, Iowa, and wife of Dr. A. H. Davidson (deceased) of Hagyard Davidson and MaGee. During her years in Lexington, she was a member of the Lexington Woman's Club, Chapter F of the PEO Sorority, founder of the Jr. MacDowell Club, and was an active volunteer for the Red Cross and Community Chest, the PTA, Girl Scouts of America, the United Community Services and the Lexington-Fayette County Tuberculosis Association. She served in many positions at Maxwell St. Presbyterian Church and later Pisgah Presbyterian Church. She was well known in the music community for accompanying many students and choirs at regional and state music festivals as well as for school programs and concerts. Her love of music eventually lead to the organist/choir director position at Pisgah Presbyterian Church and official accompanist for the Homemakers Chorus and the Woman's Club Chorus. She was an avid bridge and tennis player. In 1954 she was named "Lexington's Outstanding Woman" in a citywide poll conducted by the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, citing "her ability to be a homemaker instead of a housekeeper, her willingness to give of herself not only to her family but to the community, and her charming friendliness to all with whom she comes in contact..." as factors which lead to the honor. Catherine was predeceased by her husband, her son Gary A. Davidson, her brother William Horr, sister Noreen Balch and son-in-law Stephen C. Pierce, esq. She is survived by daughters, Carol D. Mitchell, Susan M. (Vince) Rizzo, Diana D. Pierce, and daughter-in-law, Nancy Sherwood Davidson, as well as two sisters, Mary Day and Helen Palmer; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Pisgah Presbyterian Church, Versailles, on Sat, May 14, 2011 at 4pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The American Cancer Society and Pisgah Presbyterian Church.
