To Mark Hammer and family of Eliot Hammer:
It was my pleasure to have Eliot on my University of Kentucky Swim Team in the mid-1960's (his freshman year was either fall of '64 or fall of '65). Both his teammates and I shared a respect and admiration for Eliot's perseverance and dedication to his swimming
and his contributions to the team. While acknowledging that he was not one of the better swimmers, he still attended every workout with an enthusiasm that was especially significant to me. We had some good talks about athletics, school, his ambitions, and life in general and I found Eliot to be not only an intelligent and determined person but also possessing a good sense of humor. It was an honor for me to award a Kentucky Letter "K" to Eliot. While I did not keep up with his career after UK, I was aware that he earned a PhD, which certainly did not surprise me, and that he became a college professor in his field. I do believe that we talked once or twice later and I was proud of his accomplishments. I very sorry for the family's and the world's loss of Eliot at such a young age, however, I am the better for having known him.
Kindest regards to the family
Wynn Paul, University of Kentucky Swim Coach 1964-1968; 1973-1991; Aquatic Director - 1972 - 2004.
