Fred Schultz Obituary

SCHULTZ, FRED - age 56, of Knoxville, passed away September 12, 2009 at home surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife, Angelyn Gettelfinger Campbell Schultz; his stepson, Shane Campbell; his brother, Wayne Schultz of Doylestown, PA; his parents, Mae and Fred Schultz, of Chalfont, PA; his nephew, Doug Schultz; and nieces, Linda and Beth Schultz. Fred was born in Seaford, New York in Long Island on May 7, 1953. It was there that he pursued his passion for sports and his interests in science. He attended Holy Trinity Diocesan Catholic High School where he played fullback for the football team and graduated as class salutatorian. It was at Holy Trinity his love for chemistry was discovered. He played tennis for his college team during his undergraduate years at Hofstra University on Long Island and continued his passion for science graduating in l975 with highest honors. Fred then attended Purdue University and the University of Tennessee for graduate studies for his Ph.D. After obtaining his Master's degree, he accepted a position at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, in the Chemical Technology Division, April 1978. He continued to support the mission of the laboratory and the national nuclear security administration up until his death. Fred led a distinguished career in radiochemistry, nuclear nondestructive assay instrumentation on matters of national security. He was a patriot, having made nearly 80 inspections of Russian nuclear facilities over the last ten years. While at the laboratory, he was a humanitarian and a physicist: he was awarded a patent for his device that detected hidden plastic explosives by using pulsed neutron and x-ray interrogation. With his colleagues in Oak Ridge, he traveled world-wide to test new ideas for detecting land mines before they could take life. His passion was "pulsed neutron systems." He would travel anywhere to get "beam time." His accomplishments could fill volumes. The world is a safer place because of Fred Schultz, and we are eternally indebted to his good works. He met the love of his life, Angelyn G. Campbell in 1993. They wed in October of 1994 and were celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary. The two of them traveled the world: visiting places as diverse as Russia, Greece, Eastern Europe and the American West and contributed widely to the city of Knoxville by participating in many civic activities including supporting the Knoxville Museum of Art, Friendship Force, and other charitable and political causes. Fred was also a sportsman. He loved to run track, lift weights, and play tennis. Up until he was diagnosed with cancer in September 2006, Fred could be found entering 5Ks or on the local tennis courts. The day he played the late Alvin Weinberg may have been his greatest match, and he remembered that fondly for many years. Fred was completely and selflessly committed to his family, his work, and his sport. He was one of the best and brightest of his generation working and maintaining high academic achievement. He possessed a brilliant mind, a keen intellect, a kind heart, and fine moral character. His academic passion extended to research and teaching at Purdue and Western Kentucky University. He was a well rounded individual whose interests included chess, wines, film, literature and science fiction classics including Star Trek, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. He will be sorely missed by his colleagues, friends, family and two beloved schnauzers, Wolfgang and Baxter. Friends will be received at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel on Kingston Pike on Friday evening September 18, 2009 from 5:30 until 7:30 pm with a memorial service in the chapel from 7:30 pm until 8:00 pm. Of the Catholic faith, Father Dowling will be conducting Fred's graveside service Saturday at ll:00 am at Highland Memorial Cemetery on Sutherland Ave. Pallbearers will be Wayne Schultz, Doug Schultz, Shane Campbell, Ignatius Gettelfinger, Steven Gettelfinger, and Jeff Chapman. Honorary Pallbearers are: Phil Womble, Chris Gettelfinger, Dudley Pinson, Mike Pikula, Tatum Fowler and Owen McKenna. Arrangements by Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel. www.rosemortuary.com

Fred was absolutely charming, but we had no idea what significant contributions he'd made locally and nationally. And on top of that, he was the love of your life. It's heartbreaking that he's gone so soon. We know you've got exceptional family and community support and we join in that. Grace & peace to you, Angie.

Fred was a wonderful person and friend. He was my supervisor at the WEAF for a while when I worked with Lockheed Martin. He was one of the best. He was always in a good mood, always laughing and always there when you needed him. While the world may be a sadder place,I know Heaven is rejoicing. We will miss you my friend.
