MITCHELL, Barbara Gregg
Passed away on February 8, 2004, at the age of 81. She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Gregg Neville Mitchell, her son-in-law, William (Al) Allen Weingartner and her grandson, John (Jack) William Weingartner. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Neville Mitchell (d.Nov. 10, 2001) and her daughter, Nancy Mitchell Weingartner (d. Jan. 1, 2004). She was born on September 16, 1922, in Los Angeles, the only child of Clarence and Helen Gregg of Glendale, and attended Glendale public schools and Marlboro School for Girls through high school. She then went to Stanford University where she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority, graduating Cum Laude with a BA degree in Social Sciences in 1944. She and John were married on September 26, 1943. They raised their two children in La Canada and she is fondly remembered there for her tireless charity work. She was active in her church, The Church of the Lighted Window, the Assistance League of Flintridge, being awarded a honorary lifetime membership in the Assistance League in 1977, and worked to pass many school bond initiatives. When she and her husband moved to Newport Beach in the 1970's, she continued her charity work, being a member of the Luminares. After her husband retired in 1977, they traveled to all parts of the world for the next 20 years. She will be remembered as a strong willed lady of manners and culture with a great sense of humor, a loving mother and a devoted wife. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 28, at 10 AM at Christ Church by the Sea, 1400 West Balboa Blvd., Newport Beach. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Memorial Fund at Stanford for Libraries, 301 Encina Hall, Stanford University, Stanford, California 94305.
