David Berger Obituary

January 27, 1914 - January 7, 2014 David Berger, beloved husband, father, grandpa, uncle, son, cousin and dear friend, died on Jan 7 from natural causes. He was two weeks shy of 100. His parents, Mary and Jacob, were from Poland and settled in the Bronx. His mother Mary had five siblings, and David was the middle child in his family of five. The whole extended family lived within two blocks of each other and their homes were always full of relatives. He thrived in that closeness and it remained an important part of his entire life. He met and married Gertrude in 1941 and together they moved to LA to start a new life with a young family, daughters Judy and Stephanie. Many happy summers were spent camping in Yosemite, or driving to NY and back to visit the family. Dave spent his working life at the Los Angeles Post Office, first as a clerk and later as head of the Social and Recreation Dept, a job custom-made for him as he was the world's friendliest guy. Gertrude gradually lost her sight, but that didn't stop them from traveling. With Gertrude on one arm, and their luggage on his other, they saw, smelled and ate their way through most of the world, and years later they could remember who ate what and where. Gertrude predeceased David in 2011 and Stephanie died in 2001. David's immediate family, daughter Judy, son-in-law Joe, grandchildren Casey and Adam, as well as the remaining family and a host of friends will always remember him as a sweet, kind, loving and generous person of great importance in their lives. Memorial services will be held on January 27 (ironically his 100th birthday) at 1:30pm at The Village at Sherman Oaks, 5450 Vesper Ave, Sherman Oaks.

What a wonderful and kind mam. I met David while we were volunteers at RFBD Program in Reseda. When our location closed,it was so sad especially knowing I would not see David weekly.
