Fred Onken Obituary

Onken, Jr., Fred L. In Loving Memory Born November 7, 1917, Brooklyn, NY, he graduated from Duke University in 1940 and joined the U.S. Navy in 1942, where he attended the Naval Academy with John F. Kennedy and served in the Mediterranean as a lieutenant during WWII. He married his wife of 58 years, Ruth von Mechow, in 1945. His career spanned 30 years with Procter & Gamble, where he retired as West Coast Regional Manager (Crisco). A generous philanthropist in many areas, he is described by his son-in-law, John Freeman, as "the most moral man you will ever find." Mr. Onken passed away on January 2, 2004 in Valencia, CA, after a lengthy illness, and is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughters, Virginia Freeman and Patricia Tortoricci; grandchildren, Carole Schmidt, Larry Schmidt and Vanessa McCarter; great-grandchildren, Victoria Schmidt, Gavin and Autumn McCarter; and brother and sister-in-law Warren and Marjorie Onken.

I wish that I could have been there for everyone. He will be missed. Although I have not seen Granpa for many years, he was always in my heart. I was always treated like famliy by him and Grandma Ruth. You are all my family. And I love you all very much.
