His film HORRORS OF THE BLACK MUSEUM truly scared me as a child. There was nothing more horrifying to me than seeing his body lowered into the ground on June 5th next to his parents graves at Cloverhill Cemetary in Royal Oak Michigan.

Herman knew what he wanted to do as a young boy in Detroit. He knew exactly what he wanted andit happened.

He had an interest in films and making movies and he went right to Hollywood and did them. How many people live out their dreams? He did. He had an incredible life. He achieved what he wanted for his life on his own terms. His boyhood dreams came true. And to me that is a good life to have lived. His magnificent voice will be missed. Even when he yelled one never forgot what he said as the quality of his voice was so beautiful. I loved him. And I loved his films, and that he used his voice to help young actors, myself, the family, friends, and the industry he loved. He was working at his office Cobra Media the last week of his life.

For my 13th Birthday in 1963, he brought over to the house I lived in the lion, tiger, and panther from his film BLACK ZOO. Then I and all of my friends saw the film at the Fox Theatre in Detroit which he owned for many years. The party was in the 1920's screening room downstairs. The animals were on the Fox stage in cages. None of my friend's have ever forgotten that Birthday Party! One contacted me upon hearing of his death to say just based on the memory of that event she was going to donate money in his memory.

My Uncle was a Film Producer/Writer/Actor/Distributor. He was 12 years old when he worked at the Dexter Movie Theatre in Detroit. By age 18, he had become its manager. I liked his films - that firm sense of reflection and symbolism at the end of most of his work with the body of the main character lying on the ground. I thought Joan Crawford pushing away the microphone at the end of TROG was one of the best moments I have seen on film. He was not just a low budget horror film producer. He was someone who lived his dreams - who loved films - and he was one of a kind.

With all that money he made on I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF - when he could have used the money for personal enjoyment - instead he purchased the Fox Theatre movie palace which he loved, and had been the assistant manager of before he left for Hollywood.

His films, and life should be studied by the young. His life was one of Encouragement. He should not be forgotten. He won't be by me. I have posted a tribute to him on the film web site IMDB. Go to Message Board then the topic CULT FILMS. The post is titled HERMAN COHEN DIED JUNE 2ND. There are replys on that post and also under the topic HORROR. It is wonderful to see how many people he inspired by his films, and being himself.

My best to all of my Uncle's colleagues, friends, and fans. I am in terrible shock and grief over his unexpected death. I had spoken with him several days earlier. He was joking with his great sense of humor, and hopeful in regard to the future. Thank you for caring about my Uncle Herman Cohen.

Sincerely,
Gail Cohen
