John Farrer Obituary

September 24, 1954 - April 18, 2015 Dr. John (Jay) Farrer passed away in his home on April 18, 2015 surrounded by his family and dogs on a beautiful spring day. Jay was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and physician who spent his adult life improving the lives of others. Even through his challenging illness, he made us all laugh and brought joy to all around him. Jay was a man of integrity and compassion for his family and the patients he cared for. He prided himself on providing the best care for all his patients and had a gift of healing and bringing comfort to others. He was devoted to his wife, Penny Farrer, his two daughters, Logan and Sydney Farrer, his two stepsons Matthew Davis (Rita) and Michael Davis. He was "Papa" to Max, Miles and Hazel Davis. Jay was born September 24, 1954 in San Antonio, Texas and was the son of Dr. John F. and Frances A. Farrer and was loving brother/brother in law to Laura and Jack Thomson. He attended medical school at the University of California, San Diego and had residencies at Duke University for general surgery and UCLA for urology. In keeping with Jay's love of entertaining, an open house celebration commemorating Jay's life will be held on May 3rd from 2-6 pm at the Heritage Room on Water Street in Olympia, WA. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to any of the following: Swedish Neurological Institute Providence St. Peter Hospital Palliative Care Providence Sound Home Care and Hospice Seattle Cancer Alliance. With any donation please note that the gift is in memory of John H. Farrer, MD.

For some reason Dr Ferrer popped into my head today. And then I suddenly remembered that he was probably gone. And I went in search of him, hoping that perhaps by some miracle he had beaten the cancer. And then I found his obituary. I'm sorry this condolence is so late.Dr. Ferrer was one of a kind. He was thoughtful, caring and most of all a great doctor. He always took time to explain what was going to be happening and we loved his sense of humor. I always wished he could've been my primary physician... instead of just my urologist. Before my husband was transferred to the Midwest in 2014 we had an appointment with Dr. Ferrer and he told us about his illness. I literally burst into tears. I couldn't believe such a wonderful human being was being taken from not only us but of course his family. I'll never forget he said "I can't be too sad about dying, I've had a great life." He once again showed us what an exceptional man he was. Even with such a grave illness he accepted it with grace and humor. Our very late condolences to his wife and extended family. He was a very exceptional human being. We need more men/doctors like him in this world.

I was recently told of Dr. Farrers Passing and was shocked and saddened.
I worked for him when he first came to Memorial Clinic in Urology (front desk/patient placement). He was so funny and 'normal' as a person. Compassion was his middle name. I am sure he will be truly missed.

My late Condolences to his family.
