Joseph Wetzler Obituary

Joe Wetzler, age 94, passed on September 10, 2024. He is survived by his wife Gwen of 69 years, his children Pete, Dale, and Laurie, 2 Grandchildren, and one Great Grand Child. Born in Brooklyn,NY in 1930 Joe became a US Merchant Seaman at age 16 for 7 years, and then served in the US Army in the Korean War. Joe was a stationary engineer and steam plant operator for LA Airports and LADWP, and in 1969 became a Business Agent for Local 501 International Union of Operating Engineers. Eventually, he became President, Asst Business Manager, and Director of Public Sector employees for the IUOE 501 Union. Joe spent 26 years negotiating contracts for LA City, LA County, State of California, UC System, Police, Fire, and Federal employees. Joe was Chairman of the LA County Coalition of Unions. The LA County Board of Supervisors appointed Joe to the Labor-Management Productivity Enhancement Commission and other subcommittees. Also, Joe served as a commissioner on LA County Commissions He was appointed by the Mayor to multiple city commissions. Joe's represented thousands of public sector employees, improving their working conditions and their lives. Joe retired in 1994. Joe will be interred at San Fernando Mission Catholic Cemetery in a private ceremony. Inquiries can be made there.
