Patrick McNally Obituary

October 5, 1956 - March 8, 2021 Born to Kay and HP McNally Sr in Gettysburg Pa; Paddy Mac was a man who created lifelong friends, the first being his sister Kathleen. He played rugby at UCI and CSULB, graduating with a BA in Geography. He wed Nola Burns in 1993 and rejoiced at the birth of his son, Liam. Paddy was a keen observer with a penchant for accurate recall. We couldn't get away with anything. His attention to detail suited him as a Survey Project Manager for County of Orange and Huitt-Zollars. He valued his work with Rancho Mission Viejo and Ladera Ranch. His beautiful maps are displayed at the Recorder's office.Paddy played rugby with Belmont Shore before becoming an original OC Buck and team captain. He started to referee with SCRRS then USA Rugby Referees National Panel, refereeing national championships and Rugby Super League. Off-season, he liked the faster Sevens-a-side matches, an interest that led him to develop the highly organized USA Sevens Referee Program. He established an esprit de corps in which competition and cooperation went hand in hand. With vision and tenacity, he guided the Sevens Referee Program to meet the progressively challenging pace of the game. Paddy was appointed as Performance Reviewer on the IRB Men's Sevens World Series and NACRA Sevens, in preparation for the 2016 Olympics. During his tenure in Sevens, Paddy managed all National Sevens Championships, including the high-profile USA Sevens College Rugby Championships. He was the Referee Liaison Officer for each USA IRB Sevens event from 2007 until his retirement in 2017. He wrote the first Sevens Referee Handbook (3 eds.) and published scores of articles in American Rugby News and UR7s.com websites. The memorial will be 10/2/21. You live in our heart, dear friend. And, yet, how I miss you!

Patrick was bigger than big.
He read the LA Times daily and The NY Times every Sunday. He enjoyed hard cover novels by Walter Mosley, Michael Chabon, Tana French and Jo Nesbo. He did crossword puzzles daily and never missed Jeopardy. He never wanted to go to sleep because he was afraid he might miss something. He loved his friends dearly and wept when one died. I’m grateful for the time together these past 30+ years.
I am a better person because of him.
Cheers Paddy Mac

I met the infamous Pat at CSULB in 1975. He stayed kind and honorable, a rare quality for any person. He spoke so joyously about Nola and Liam, and would light up when saying their names. Fortunately, I last spent time with him just before the pandemic. Patrick was the kind of person who left his handprint on your heart. Heaven got a good one

Paddy Mac was one of those special human beings that even if you only saw once a year, you were excited for it.
He always remembered you and would take time to chat. I will miss seeing him and saying hi to him greatly. He used to stay with my dad back when my dad was able to referee, and I loved joking with them that the only time I could stomach spending time alone with two referees was when it was them. Hopefully they are both reffing games together in spirit now.

Paddy Mac was such a great teacher, friend and person. I feel blessed to have known him and so happy that I got a nickname from he and John Curry (Cindy-Lu). We will all miss him but I feel certain that in the grand scheme of things we’ll meet again.
Condolences to all his family, you lost a wonderful soul.

Patrick was one of the nicest humans I was lucky enough to know. Back in the early 80’s in Belmont Shore he was fun to watch and take pictures of on the rugby field and enjoyed our conversations off the field. The world lost an amazing man. RIP my friend. Condolences to all family and close friends.

Paddy was the kind of friend that transforms your life. His easy manner, his ever present smile, his curiosity, his interest in what you had to say, everything in him was an invitation to share, to open your eyes to the world as he saw it. Nothing was about him, everything was about us, all of us. I miss him terribly, but at the same time, he lives in me and inspires me to be a better person.
