Richard Kerns Obituary

February 22, 1932 - December 15, 2020 Richard "Dick" M. Kerns passed peacefully in his sleep on December 15th, 2020 at the Motion Picture & Television Fund in Woodland Hills, CA. He is survived by his sons from his first marriage, Jack, Ed and Rick Kerns, and their families. He is also survived by his daughter, Ashley C. Kerns, from his second marriage to Joanna Kerns (actor/director). Though they divorced in 1985, Joanna and Dick formed a deep friendship again later in life and shared many laughs up until the end. Dick, originally from Seattle, WA, relocated at a young age to Los Angeles, CA. He graduated from Loyola of Los Angeles in 1953 and successfully pursued a career in the entertainment industry. Dick served as the West Coast President of EUE Screen Gems (1961-1978) before partnering to create HISK (1978-1991). Over his career, Dick worked as the executive producer for advertising related to many notable brands such as McDonald's, Tide and Budweiser. Dick was a film lover and proud, long time member of The Directors Guild of America having qualified when he worked as a 1st AD.Any in memoriam donations can be made directly to Fiscalini Ranch Preserve in Cambria, CA. Please indicate the donation is for Richard M. Kerns' memorial placard. The placard will be placed on a bench near the placard for his daughter, Shannon Kerns (8.31.1954-12.10.2010). And, when you raise your next glass, please toast Dick and his long, full, wild, precious life.

Dick was a good friend and a great leader. For many years he was the heart and soul of E.U.E.
Screen Gems West. In 1969, he took a chance on a young director and for that, I will forever
be grateful. Kerns was a master at running production companies and even better at creating
unspoken respect and friendship. I will always look up to Dick and someday I hope we can play
another game of pool upstairs.
