Roslyn Chasan Obituary

September 22, 1932 - February 24, 2023 Roslyn Pearl Chasan was born on September 22, 1932, in Luzerne, Pennsylvania to Herold and Esther (née Neumann) Lefkowitz. The family moved to Los Angeles in 1944.
In the early 1950s, Roz was set up on a blind date by mutual friends with Dr. Fred Chasan, M.D., a WWII United States Army veteran of the European theatre. The couple married on January 3, 1954, and moved to Torrance. A few years later, in the late 1950s, the two moved to Rancho Palos Verdes and had three children: Mark, Jeff, and Paul.
Roz had a dream to become an attorney, which led her to attend college and law school at night, and pass the California bar. She opened her law practice in Torrance shortly thereafter and represented clients such as The Great Western Land & Cattle Company. She also became one of the first female Judges in California pro tempore within the Superior Courts.
Ever the entertainer, Roz loved hosting parties in homes that she designed. In the late 1970s she built her architectural masterpiece: a Spanish-style house on the cliffs of Rancho Palos Verdes with a stunning panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean and an infinity veranda. The city's water mains were in disrepair and the underground pipes burst, destabilizing the cliffs beneath the home's foundation. This gave Roz and Fred the opportunity to relocate, and they settled in Manhattan Beach for the remainder of their careers.
In the late 1980s, when Roz retired from her law practice and Fred retired from his private medical practice, the couple moved to Rancho Santa Fe, where Roz grew and managed a real estate portfolio and Fred rejoined the United States Military as a medical doctor in the Navy.
The couple continued to travel the world in-style by land, air, and sea well into their golden years, Roz with her Gucci hat and Fred with his camera. In September 2001, they visited New York City so that Fred could spend time with family and Roz could shop in SoHo. The couple dined at Windows on the World in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on the evening of September 10, just hours before the September 11 terrorist attacks.
After Fred died in June 2005, Roz continued to tend to her expansive and vibrant gardens, and explore the world, vacationing with her family in Hawaii and Europe.
Roz died peacefully of natural causes on February 24, 2023 surrounded by loved ones. She is survived by her three children Mark, Jeff, and Paul. She will be buried alongside her husband in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, with a view of the city and the sea.

Our family has fond memories of our visits with Roz and her adoring husband, Fred. Roz will always be remembered for her elegance and eloquence. When our kids were younger, she introduced them to the Dr. Seuss trees at the beach. When my husband and I visited several years back around the time of his birthday, Rozzie had a birthday party for him with other family members present as well. She was always that thoughtful. We will miss her beautiful smile, but we'll always have wonderful memories of good times together.

Roz and I got to be close as relatives and truly as friends. I will miss her.
