Raymond Cano Obituary

Raymond L. Cano, 88, of Mesilla, NM, returned to his Maker the morning of Tuesday, September 18, 2018.
Born October 4, 1929, to Octaviano Baldonado Cano and Francisca Cumplido Lucero, two doors down from what became his long-time home.
Mesillero to the core, Raymond was always visible and active in Mesilla as he grew up with his sister and five brothers. He went to school and college, traveled, worked and lived abroad.
While working for GE in Madrid Spain, he met his "Amor," Mila, whom he married in Germany 60 years ago. Together they returned to Mesilla to raise their children, Silvia (deceased), Raymond and Karín, and create a loving home that touched the hearts of many. Here he worked tirelessly to shape his community and help preserve the essence of the Mesilla he loved.
Having lost both parents by the age of 18, he was the first of his family to graduate from college at NMSU with the unfailing support of his siblings and others who saw his potential. He was an electrical engineer by trade, a shaper of his community by passion, a U.S. Air Force veteran and the master of "do-it-yourself". He was an explorer, thinker, storyteller, artist, carpenter, and appreciator of all the little and big things that make life sweet. He believed in the goodness of people, the power of education and the need for community. He never forgot where he came from or who helped him along the way. He was compelled to share his knowledge and resources with his family and any who found themselves under his influence drawn from his great appreciation for those who cleared a path for him.
He is survived by his wife, Emilie (Mila), son Raymond and his wife Shelley; daughter, Karín and her husband Joshua Rice; son-in-law Reynaldo Garcia; grandchildren Raymond Trey, Isabella, Juliet and Marisol; great-grandson, Jaxon; brother Gilbert Cano and his wife Dolores; his brother-in-law, Daniel Lucero; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Cano and Patricia Cano; Mila's brother Gunter and his wife Helga, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Adelina; brothers Andres (and wife Emma), Ramon, Manuel (and wife Nina), Hector and David; brother-in-law Heinz Lubbeus Harms; and daughter Silvia Cano-Garcia.
Service to be held Saturday, September 22 at 10 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 1701 Missouri Ave., Las Cruces, NM officiated by Pastor Jared Carson. There will be a brief reception afterward at the church, followed by burial at San Albino Church Cemetery.

How very sad to read that Ray has left this earth. I worked almost side by side at WSMR with Ray. I considered him my friend, adviser and confidant.

Very sad to learn of Ray's passing. I knew Ray when we worked at the WSMR Plans Office. He was always a dignified gentleman who was not afraid to speak his mind. He was one of a kind and will be missed. Our condolences to the family.

Dear Cano Family - Our sincerest condolences on the passing of your husband and father, Raymond. He was a great friend to my parents, Raymond and Emma Garcia Chavez. My mother always told wonderful stories of her days attending Las Cruces Union with Raymond. Raymond always shared his stories of Mesilla and of NMSU from the "good old days". He was an honorable Veteran and a true Aggie. I will always treasure my memories of Raymond and Silvia. May they rest in peace.
