John A. Uhrich

John A. Uhrich, III AIKEN, SC John A "Jack" Uhrich, III, MSW, M.Ed, MAT, a psychotherapist, teacher, and activist, died on Friday, July 18, 2014. Jack was a resident of Aiken, S.C., for a number of years. He was born in Lebanon, on December 5, 1943, to the late J. Allen "Brud" Uhrich, Jr. and Faye Shields Uhrich. Jack dedicated his life to helping others and social justice. He made it his life's work to help make positive changes in people's lives. He was a Green Party Candidate for the U.S. Congress in New Mexico in 1996. He also ran for Sandoval, N.M., County Commissioner in 1998. Jack was a 1961 graduate of Lebanon Catholic High School and went on to graduate from Lebanon Valley College in 1965, Antioch College, and Hunter College Graduate School of Social Work. He was a teacher in New York and New Mexico. He was also a psychotherapist in private practice and an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina School of Social Work. He is survived by his loving wife, Arlean Tessler; stepson, Jonathan Tessler and wife, Michele; stepdaughter, Vicki Bernard and her former husband, Billy Bernard, and current partner, Kimmy Baker; and stepson, Matthew Tessler and wife, Lauren. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jordan Bernard and wife, Shelby, Sarah Bernard, Isabella Bernard, Leah Tessler, James Tessler, Greg Santos, and Tim Santos; and godchild, Alexes Hargrove. Jack is also survived by brothers, Tom Uhrich and wife, Evonne, Jim Uhrich and wife, Sue, and Kevin Uhrich and life partner, Marina Tse; sisters, Catherine Anderson and husband, Terry, Cecelia Schmidt and husband, Paul, Martha Shaak, widow of Dennis, and Mary Kern, widow of Terry; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand- nephews. A memorial service for Jack will be held at the Aiken Unitarian Universalist Church on Saturday, September 27, 2014.
