May - 2019 .. I'm just now seeing this and it is with great sadness. Martha Charles was my suite-mate at Auburn and I loved everything about her. I spent many weekends at her house in Phenix City and we had so much fun. We lost touch after our mutual friend, Sally, passed away and I regret that. When we were at Auburn she and I would walk together to breakfast and I could never say a word until after she had had her coffee. She was a dear friend and like Tina Turn would say simply the BEST!! Look forward to seeing you again one day, MC. Much love

I am so proud to have been Martha Charles Chasen's granddaughter. My brothers and I called her "Gram". That's what we have called her ever since I was born, being the first child of Leah and Jarrett Cudd. For my brothers and I, from oldest to youngest she would nickname us "Pipsqeaker number one", "Pipsqueaker number two", and "Pipsqueaker number three". I have so many wonderful memories with my amazing and beautiful Gram. She would always take my brothers and I to the movies all the time. She would take us to Steak n' Shake for lunch and a milkshake before a movie. We would spend the night at her house and in the morning she would make us biscuits with grape jelly, and she cooked us bacon and eggs too. Gram was a second mother to me. I could trust her, just as I trust my mom. She always made me smile and she always gave the best advice to me, and sometimes I would learn that in the end when I wouldn't take her advice at times. Before she got sick, she would always dance and sing. In the car, she always played Elvis Presley music and she got my brothers and I to fall in love with his music, but definitely not as much as she did. She loved for me to sing Elvis Presley songs and to put on performances for her and the rest of our family. She also loved when I sang "Somewhere Over a Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz. We would have Easter at her house and the whole family would gather together to celebrate that Jesus Christ had risen. Gram loved fashion, she was very fashionable and had a very good sense of style. I remember in 6th grade she helped me pick out a dress for the formal dance. She would take me shopping and help me pick out clothes for the fall of the upcoming school year... She would take my brothers and I to Chuck E. Cheese and Monkey Joes when we were littler. Her favorite restaurant was Long Horn and I grew to love that restaurant a whole lot too. Anybody who knew her knows how much light she brought into people's lives. Her smile and laughter was contagious, and she had the best sense of humor. She was a very intelligent woman.. God gained the most beautiful angel, inside and out on February 25, 2017. She will forever be remembered, and her happy and bright spirit will carry on. I know that she would want me to be happy and to do the great things that she believed that I could do one day, but to also remember all of the fun times we had. I love you so much Gram ❤

Martha Charles was one of the nicest people I have ever known. Our classrooms were next door to each other the whole time she was at Hardaway. We ate lunch together almost every day usually with Larry Hendrickson who always had a joke to tell us. We sponsored a club together that raised funds for the girls club and put a Halloween carnival for them every year. The club also bought Christmas presents for needy children. We talked about our families often and I know how much she loved every one of hers.I am so sorry. We will all miss her so much. I know her beautiful smile is lighting up the halls of heaven

I was in Phenix City last week from Maryland for my Mother's funeral when I heard Martha Charles had passed away. The news stunned me. I first got to know her in fifth grade in Mrs. Musgrave's class. We stayed great friends all through school and beyond. She was Maid of Honor at my wedding over 50 years ago, on the same day she met Alan for the first time. I will always be grateful for her friendship and a wealth of wonderful memories. I know many others will as well.

Mrs. Chasen and I worked at Spencer together. She was a class act, to say the least. She was always so positive and wore that beautiful, warm smile. She will definitely be missed; however, take thought in knowing that her memories will last a lifetime!

To Martha Charles Chasen's family:

I worked with her at Spencer and fell in love with her. When she left for Hardaway, I was sad. Until my son, JW, was assigned to Hardaway. I told her she could not retire until he graduated. Fortunately for us she was there for all of his years. We ran into her several years ago when we were out to eat. JW was not with us. It was good to see her and reminisce. Remember all the good times, sweet memories, and the love she gave to you. She will be missed.

Leah, Charlie, and family,
Please accept my deepest sympathy. Your mother was a delightful person and I am so glad I got to know her. My first meeting with her was at a Hardaway PTA open house when Charlie was in my science class. I remember shaking her hand, and she had a huge smile on her face when she told me she was Charlie's mother. Later, I got an opportunity to work with her at Hardaway. We had the same lunch break, and she was always very friendly and entertaining! The last time I got to see her was at Leah's home, when I was being introduced to Abby. It was great to see her then! I will keep your family in my prayers!
Much love,
Angela Medley

Martha Charles has been my friend since we were six years old. She is so very dear to me. Her mere presence would light up the room. She was so kind, caring, and fun-loving. The Class of '62 will not be the same without her. She will truly be missed. Blessings to all who will miss her radiant smile!
