I'd like to share a few thoughts of Adam with you.
Of course, this isn't anything that you don't already know about him or anything that we don't already love about him.
The Adam smiles:
There is the sheepish smile he would flash - that's both sweet and knowing. That was the smile the expressed without words, kindness and “I know what you're doing.” He gave me those smiles when I might be telling a story of a situation that I didn't quite handle the very best I could.
As we sat in the backyard at the Mira Mesa house we would talked about how I could have done this or I could have done that. Often times it would then break into that bigger smile that meant you're funny (good or bad) and I still love you. It was almost like him hugging you. I like to call that one the “hug smile.”
Then there's the “thank you smile.” It's a small little smile he gives when he's about to leave that somehow says thank you with a gentleness that is all Adam.
I really love those smiles of his.
You know that movie line “One time, at band camp...” well, let's substitute that for “One time, at the Mira Mesa house….”
Ok well, one time, at the Mira Mesa house….
...we had barbequed, did a little singing, lots of talking and lots of laughing (sometimes at each other, but mostly with each other) it turned into a sleepover. After getting blankets and deciding where we were all going to lay down, we settled down. Most everyone already fell asleep. After just a few minutes, you heard someone plucking the guitar. It was Adam plucking away on the guitar that song “Honey Baby” he was just learning then. He kept plucking the chorus part, over and over and over. Ana was trying to sleep and she said “Oh my God.” I told her babe he's learning. She waited a minute or so and then yelled “Adam!”
Ever since then I think of Adam when I hear that song.
I cherish that memory and so many others, especially those smiles that I will miss.
