Alan Day Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 5 to May 12, 2023.
Dr. Alan Scott Day, Visiting Professor at Furman University and Department Head at Greenville Technical College, passed away on Monday April 17, 2023, at the age of 78. Alan was born November 11, 1944 and grew up in Marlboro, MA with his parents George and Barbara, and his younger brother Doug.

Alan attended Hampden-Sydney College and was active in Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He was named social chairman and planned many themed parties. There he met Sally Daughtry, whom he married in 1966. He graduated from HSC in 1966, and then continued his studies at Clemson University, receiving a PhD in Organic Chemistry in 1969. He moved to Greenville, SC with Sally in 1973, with their daughter, Carrie.

Alan started teaching at Greenville Technical College in the chemistry department and was Head of the Science department in 1971. He quickly became a beloved teacher to all of his students. He would tell his young daughter answers to quizzes and plant her in his classes to answer aloud, impressing the college students. He also spent years teaching chemistry to chiropractic students at Sherman College in Spartanburg. After retiring from Greenville Tech, he enjoyed temporary positions at Furman University teaching Environment Science and Organic Chemistry. He delighted his students by referring to himself at "Professor DumbleDay" and used pop culture references to help teach. He was a superb lecturer, among the greatest, as his lectures were characterized by clarity and his amazing wit. He affected the course of study for thousands of students over the years, who pursued careers in Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry Chiropractic and many other fields.

Dr Day's passion for teaching Organic Chemistry, and his inspirational leadership, was matched by his love for the fair treatment of people and love for animals. He had a strong sense of social and economic justice and a keen sense of humor which made everyone love him. He loved the Boston Red Sox, Monty Python, bad puns, made up jokes and riddles. He was an artist, a short story writer, and loved reading non-fiction. Alan was also a huge animal lover - he rescued dogs in need, and contributed to many animal organizations.

His friends and family will remember his strong intellect, his dry sense of humor, the twinkle in his eyes, and his appreciation of a good joke. Dr Day was notorious for bringing light onto everyone's day.

Alan is survived by his daughter Carrie, his granddaughter Catherine Dragon, and his brother Doug. Donations in his honor can be made to the Greenville Humane Society, College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University, and the Seeing Eye in Morristown NJ.

I´m sorry to read of Alan´s passing. I went to Hildreth Elementary school in Marlboro Mass with Alan. He was such a nice and quiet guy. I remember him the most because of his birthday was one day after mine. Rest in peace Alan.

To: The family of Dr. Day
I was so saddened to learn of Dr. Day's passing. I looked forward to seeing Dr. Day everydy at work. I worked with him in the Nurs/Sciences building until he retired. Dr. Day was smart, friendly and cared about his children. He always gave me words of wisdom when my children were in college. He also offered Chem tips to my daughter. The last time I saw him was at Furman University. We sat down on the bench and reminisced about old times at TEC. He was still so peaceful and joyful. I loved Dr. Day as a co-worker, teacher and as a person. He was "one of a kind". He will truly be missed by his former co-workers. It was always comforting to know that he was still teaching at Furman University. RIP Dr. Day, you left an awesome legacy behind.

I had Dr. Day for organic chemistry at Greenville Tech. As hard as it was, he managed to make it understandable - and fun. I remember some of his crazy jokes to this day. He really cared about his students. I feel so blessed that I had the chance to know him and to learn from him. Remembering him makes me smile.

I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Day's passing. I had him for organic chemistry as a chiropractic student at Sherman College. We also selected him to be our commencement speaker at graduation. He made chemistry fun and always brought "light" with him. Prayers of comfort and love to his family.

Alan was a special friend and a joy! I always felt better just being in his presence. He had a wise and wonderful way of teaching, leading and living. I always loved how he took such great pride in his daughter and supported her in every way. We started at Tech just about the same time and as a fellow teacher and then administrator I valued him and was always grateful to have his perspective, calmness, and sense of humor no matter what the situation or what the subject. He will be missed by many but remembered fondly by all.

I was saddened to just hear about Alan´s passing. I was his dean at Greenville Tech for many years!

Who would have ever thought that someone with a PhD in Organic Chemistry could be such a fun loving guy! His classes were always a treat to observe because he made chemistry understandable and enjoyable.

What a gem of a teacher and human being he was! I am sure his presence will be missed by his family and friends.
