Alan King Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 19, 2025.
Alan Ross King, 90, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, in Novato, California, surrounded by his loving family after a long and fulfilling life.

Alan was born on October 26, 1934, the third of four sons, in Schenectady, New York, to William Julian and Helen Ross King. During his childhood, the King family relocated to Los Angeles, where Alan spent his formative years. He later earned a degree in mechanical engineering from UCLA, where his father had previously taught as a professor. Alan was always proud of his father and the highlight of his education was a prerequisite book reading, "The Unwritten Laws of Engineering", which was written by William.

Alan met the love of his life, Georgia Russell, thanks to their shared affection for the city of San Francisco. Alan had transferred there as a Navy Seabee, and Georgia as a recent BYU graduate. They were married shortly thereafter and spent the next 63 years by each other's side. Throughout his life they were both devoted to their four children, Russell, Steven, Kimberly and Kathleen. Alan would always prioritize his free time to spend with his family doing what he loved most, hiking, camping and traveling to explore new parts of the world.

Alan dedicated much of his career to Pacific Bell in San Francisco and San Ramon, retiring at the age of 58 after 28 years of service. Retirement allowed him to pursue his passions for travel and learning. He and Georgia frequently visited Europe to experience its diverse cultures and histories. Alan also organized and led hiking groups for over 20 years, exploring the natural beauty of Marin County/Point Reyes and his beloved Sierras.

It was always family first with Alan and his children who all feel blessed to have had their lives influenced by such a loving and devoted father.

He is survived by his beloved wife Georgia; his sons Russell (wife Kelly) and Steven (wife Kellie); his daughters Kimberly (husband Craig Burnett) and Kathleen (husband Aaron Olsen); and five cherished grandchildren: Carly, Haley, Mitchell, Emma, and Alex.

A funeral service will be held on January 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 787 Kendon Lane, Novato.

43 years ago, as a result of my friendship with a 20 year ols Russ King, I was fortunate enough to meet Mr...& Mrs. King. Over the next 13 years I met them occasionally and we even played tennis together. It was always obvious to me that they were a loving, devoted couple and being around them was always a pleasure. My family and I moved from Marin County but on a visit to Novato some 4 years ago I made a point of going to visit them. Nothing had changed, they were still the loving couple that I had been so comfortable with so many years ago. I send my love and condolences to Georgia and the family. Thank goodness that Alan was with us for such a long distinguished period of time. Graham

Taken in the Dolomites, June 2011. A favorite trip for all of us. I wish Alan were here to repeat it.
