Alma Martin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 19, 2010.
Funeral services for Alma Rudd Martin will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, March 20, 2010, at Martinsville Baptist Church with Bro. William Daniel officiating and the Rev. Rex Humphreys assisting. Burial will follow in Martinsville Cemetery. Alma was born October 24, 1923, in the Ironosa Community in San Augustine County, to Joseph Carlton Rudd and Addie Forbis Rudd, and died March 17, 2010, in Nacogdoches. She and Russell Lowell Martin were married April 30, 1946, and resided in the Martinsville Community, where they raised their family. Alma was a stay-at-home mother, who was very devoted to her family. She was also a loyal member of Martinsville Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday school for over fifty years. Alma was also a dedicated member of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for almost fourteen years, accumulating 3,500 hours of time worked. She was very committed to all of her "jobs" at Memorial, and dearly loved all of her "volunteer" friends, as well as the staff at Memorial. Alma was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Addie Rudd; her husband of 28 years, Lowell Martin; a brother, Buel Rudd; and a great-grandson Joshua Looney. She is survived by her children, son, Tommy Martin and wife, Marsha, of Willis, Texas; daughter, Brenda Harris, and husband, Frank, of Nacogdoches; and son, Robert Martin of Nacogdoches; five grandchildren, Chad Harris of Garland, Texas, Jamie Berney and husband, Justin, of Nacogdoches, Kurt Harris of Nacogdoches, Derek Martin of Austin, Texas, and Torri Martin of Willis, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Noah and Rance Berney of Nacogdoches and Fayth Harris of Garland. She is also survived by her brothers Hollis Rudd of Nacogdoches and Wayne Rudd of Martinsville; sisters, Adelle Chandler, Ann Green and Marie Green, and husband, Elvis, all of Martinsville, and sister-in-law, Mildred Martin of Martinsville. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she always enjoyed spending time with them. Alma was loved deeply by her family and friends and will be missed by everyone who knew her. She was a positive influence on those around her. Her family would like to thank her doctors and the staff of Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital who cared for her these past months of her illness. Pallbearers will be Chad Harris, Kurt Harris, Justin Berney, Shelton Martin, Gordy Brown and Jerry Skelton. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The American Cancer Society, 3623 Buckingham, Nacogdoches, Texas 75965 or to Martinsville Cemetery Association, c/o Brian Justice, P.O. Box 93, Martinsville, Texas 75958, or a charity of choice. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2010, at Laird Funeral Home. Ernie and I are both so very sorry for your loss. Alma was one of the sweetest, dearest friends we ever had. We were truly blessed to know her. She and I had so many wonderful times when we worked together in the library at school, and we had such fun together....much laughter and many great conversations there and on the telephone as well, after she left the school. She was devoted to Martinsville Baptist Church...I remember too how she studied her Sunday School lesson on Saturday afternoons and evenings, preparing to teach her class the following mornings. I dearly loved Alma, as did Ernie, and our love goes out to all of her family, many of whom we also know and love. May God comfort you all during this most difficult of times.
