I am saddened by the passing of Alvin Poussaint even though I have not interacted with him for almost three decades. In high school we sat together as the first chair in the clarinet section of the Stuyvesant High School Band. As such we saw a lot of each other, particularly at football games. I was bad at playing and marching simultaneously; Alvin taught me how to be adequate at it. After high school we met only once - at a celebration of Martin Luther King at my University, when the featured speaker was a classmate of ours at Stuyvesant, Robert Moses. He had invited Alvin to participate in an open discussion of algebra as a civil right.
Although I haven´t seen him since, I have thought about him often, and remembered him in high school as a true intellect.
