Andrew Kieran Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 22, 2025.
Andrew Robert Charles Kieran passed away on August 6, 2025 at the age of 64. The world has lost a man whose priceless quips never failed to entertain, whose brilliant brain never failed to enlighten, and whose gentle kindness touched people and animals alike.

The youngest of 7 children, Andrew grew up in Toronto, Ontario. He has left an enormous hole in his siblings' hearts: Michael (Shelley), Pat (Dave), Mark (Jan), Jon (Ellen), and Narf. His loving wife, Rebecca, is crushed. The quiet is also very loud for his besties: Scott and Sue, Peter, Sally and Paul, Richard and Angela, Alix and Jamie, Linda (and the boy),Gail and Jill, and his college bestie from Trent, Andrea. He was predeceased by his oldest sister Susan, one of Andrew's favorite people in the world. He was also predeceased by his nephew James, a kind soul who died too young. He will also be terribly missed by current nieces and nephews: Caitlin, Alexis, Nicholas, Justin, Chris, Andy, Graeme, Robbie, Sean, Arielle, Johnny, DJ, Michael, Dianna, Haley, and his godchildren Tristan and Phoebe.

Computers were Andrew's whole world. Instead of buying a motorcycle in his teens like his brothers, Andrew bought himself a computer kit, the SWTPC 6800. At the time it cost $450, a sizable fortune for a teenager. He built it from scratch and thus began a lifelong love affair with 0's and 1's. In 1995, he bought a used SWTPC 6800 on Ebay and hoped to one day restore it in his retirement. We are happy to report that last summer he did just that. The green "hello" on his monitor marked a quietly proud moment.

We will always remember Andrew for his humor. He could easily crack up a room full of people with a joke. The speed with which he produced unrehearsed one-liners was both astonishing and unmatched by others. His family was at Andrew's mercy, and suffered hysterical bouts of laughter, often to the point of tears, with his perfectly relevant cracks of humor. Andrew had quip at the ready for almost any situation.

One afternoon about a month before he died, he looked tired and someone suggested that maybe he nap for a bit. He responded with, "Nah, I'll be napping a lot next month." And those cracks just kept on coming. His illness was hard, but he never felt sorry for himself.

Andrew will always be remembered for his kindness. He was a corporate VP of sales for Ingram Micro, Canada in the 1990s. But the need to be ruthless in that job, left him hollow. When he moved to CT to work for the start-up Computer's For Sure, he was beginning to realize that corporate life was not aligned with his beliefs. In 2002, he accepted a teaching post at the Williams School in New London, teaching computer science and running the school's computer systems. After about 6 years, he then settled into his most loved career in small business IT management with Sextent BTS. He had a propensity for solving problems and endless patience for clients who called to find a password (you know who you are!). He never made anyone feel inadequate or foolish for asking a question.

Andrew Kieran loved dogs more than people and we were all ok with that. His pups were Lance, Hobbs, Gracie, Blue, and Huck. His surviving little Daisy Mae doesn't know what to do with herself.

We will be ever grateful to Dr. Marianne Vahey for double checking his kidney #s. She caught his gastric cancer in the winter of 2024. We appreciated the amazing care he received at Smilow. Thank you to Dr. Michael Cechini for always being straight with us. Thank you to Dr. Vinay Rao - your compassion and demeanor were a huge comfort to us. And to Matt, his inpatient nurse, you rock.

We wish you didn't have to go, but we are grateful you are no longer in pain. You will never be forgotten Andrew, and we can't wait for you to push the book off the shelf.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Connecticut Humane Society, or the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, Branford, CT.

Andrew and I worked together in the early 1980s, at the very beginning of the personal computer era. Andrew was a critical part of our team, known for his technical prowess with DOS prompts and installing function cards and making them work effortlessly. But he was loved for his sense of humour, sharp wit, for making everyone feel good about asking stupid questions and for making our customers enormously happy with their very costly investments. He was indispensable, and will remain so in our hearts.

I had the privilege of working with Andrew supporting our companies IT system for many years. I admired his intellect and enjoyed his humor. It is so sad to loose him but I am happy I had the chance to know him and happy that he's no longer in pain. Rest easy my friend. Bella will miss getting treats from you.
