of Binghamton
Andrew Taras, 92, of Binghamton, died Monday afternoon, March 12, 2007, at the James G. Johnston Memorial Nursing Home. He was predeceased by his first wife, Kathryn Gillen Taras; his brothers, Stephen, Michael and John Taras; a sister, Mary Taras; and a granddaughter, Kathryn Governal. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Schrader Taras, Binghamton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Roberta and George Governal, Tucson, Ariz., Kathryn Andrea Taras and her husband, Anthony Elitcher, Brooklyn; a grandson, Robert Andrew Governal, Middletown, Conn.; several nieces and nephews. Andrew retired after 39 years of employment at the IBM Corporation and was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club. He started as a waterboy at IBM and culminated with his proudest achievement, the successful filing of the patent for IBM System 360 in 1968. He enjoyed travel. The family wishes to acknowledge the staff of the James G. Johnston Memorial Nursing Home Sun and Star Units, and also the skilled nursing for their care and compassion.
Funeral services were handled by the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Andy may be made to the Alzheimers Association of the Southern Tier, 401 Hayes Avenue, Endicott, N.Y. 13760.
