Ann GALLANT Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix on Sep. 27, 2014.
Ann (Patan) Gallant
December 27, 1933 - September 11, 2014
Ann was born on her grandparent's farm near Lamont, AB on December 27, 1933 and passed away peacefully on September 11, 2014 at Luther Place at the age of 80 years. She was predeceased by her parents Matthew and Pearl Patan; husband Thomas (1975); sons Brian (1982) and Garry (2012); brother John Patan; and sisters and brothers-in-law Doris & Tom Davis, and Rose & Bill Cowan. Ann is survived by her children Dale (Twila), Bev, Yvonne, and Bruce (Shelly); grandchildren Tara, Riley, Tyrel, Dylan and Crysta; great-grandchildren Lexie, Erik, Lily and Ivy; sister Diane (Alex) Pittman and brothers Bill (Doreen) Patan and Tony (Lynne) Patan; family friends Amanda & Justin Lynchuk, Marilyn Spence, and Pat Korosi; and many other relatives and friends. Ann grew up on her parent's farm in the Greenwood district near Lloydminster, SK. She married Thomas Gallant in November 17, 1953 in Lloydminster. After briefly living in Lloydminster and Unity Ann and Tom moved to Saskatoon where their six children were born and raised. Ann began working at the Lutheran Sunset Home in 1978 and completed her Special Care Aide training during her nearly 20 years of employment at the home. She enjoyed her work and volunteered at LSH for a time after her retirement. In 1990, Ann purchased a cabin at Lucien Lake and spent many happy summers relaxing on the deck reading and knitting, and feeding squirrels and other stray animals that stopped by. Ann suffered a stroke in 2012 and was determined to recover enough to return home to her apartment. She succeeded and lived at home for the next year and a half with the help of her children, son Bruce in particular. After a brief illness, Ann moved into Luther Place in August 2014. She had come full circle – the caregiver was now the one receiving care. She was welcomed by some of the same people she had worked with years ago. Ann's family would like to thank the staff at City Hospital Unit 6300 and at Luther Place for the care and comfort provided during the last months of Ann's life. Ann loved the outdoors and had a large garden and a well-tended yard for many years. She was a great baker and cook and no family get-together was complete without her home-made perogies, cabbage rolls and baking. Ann made everyone feel welcome in her home and you could always stop by for a cup of coffee or cold can of pop (and also a full meal if you wanted one). She loved to knit and sold her mittens, scarves and hats at local craft sales for several years. She also enjoyed weekly bingo games and was a fan of the Blue Jays. Ann enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and watching them grow, and she took great pride in their accomplishments. They have many happy memories of sleep-overs and outings with Grandma. She also enjoyed being "Grandma Ann" to her great-grandchildren and having birthday, Easter and Christmas parties where they could all get together and have "pickles and puddin'" and a lot of fun. Ann was a kind and giving person with a good sense of humor and will be missed by all who knew her. A celebration of Ann's life will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 11 AM at the Saskatoon Funeral Home followed by interment of her ashes at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home. Ph 306-244-5577

Although it's been many years since I've seen Ann, all the memories I have of her are good. She was a cheerful, loving, energetic person and we are glad to have known her.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Although it's been many years since I've chatted with Ann, I often think of her and Brian. She always treated me like family and I know I'm truly fortunate to have known them both.
