Anthony John Russo passed away on November 6, 2022 in his home at the age of 82. He loved family above all else, and was known for his love of sports and great sense of humor.
Anthony was born in San Francisco, CA to John and Katherine Russo, and graduated from Lowell High School. He was married for 60 years to his loving wife Kay, who passed in September of 2017. With his wife Kay, Anthony moved to Petaluma in 1971 where he spent the next 38 years raising his family until his retirement. He and Kay moved to Rio Vista in 2009, and Anthony returned to Sonoma County in 2018 to spend the remainder of his life with his family.
Anthony spent 30 years as a deputy sheriff for Marin County, where he was a patrol officer, jail sergeant, and detective. He returned to law enforcement after a short retirement to spend 8 years as a bailiff for the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department.
Anthony loved to fish, and was an avid 49ers and Giants fan. He was an active member of the Catholic church, and finished his time as a member of St. Joseph Parish in Cotati.
Anthony is survived by his loving children: Margaret Meyer (Fred), Anthony Russo Jr. (Cindy), and Theodore Russo (Cathy); his brothers, Joe Russo and Vince Russo (Marie); sister, Kathy Farrell, and sister-in-law, Joan Russo. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren: Anita, Ryan, Justin, Regan, Melanie, Tricia, Sarah, Josh, and Jake; and his 9 great-grandchildren: Annabelle, Lily, Olivia, Alex, Travis, Jonathan, Mia, Gemma, and Evelynn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kay; son, John Russo; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Russo; brothers, Leonard Russo, Pasquale Russo; and brother-in-law, Charles Farrell. Anthony was the patriarch of a large and loving family, and loved to spend time with all of them. He will be missed tremendously by his family and friends.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Monday, November 14, 2022 from 11 am - 6 pm with a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:30 pm at Parent-Sorensen Mortuary, 850 Keokuk Street in Petaluma. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at 10:15 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 150 St. Joseph Way in Cotati.

My deepest condolences to the Russo family. I worked with Tony at both the Marin County Sheriffs Dept and the Sonoma County Sheriffs Dept. A real leader and loyal friend who understood that the Troops always come first. It was an honor to serve with Tony and call him friend. Rest in peace my brother.
