Anthony Tara Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 20, 2024.
Tara, Anthony "Tony", 93 of St. Petersburg passed away September 12, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Malacky, Slovakia on April 25, 1931. He left Czechoslovakia at just 18 as the Soviet Union began to invade. For the next 10 years, he lived, worked, and traveled in Germany, Canada and the United States. He settled in St. Petersburg thanks to a love of the warm weather and sunny beaches. He met his beautiful wife on Spa Beach; they were married for 64 years and raised a close-knit family. Tony was a civil designer with George F. Young for over 30 years. He designed and built 2 houses where they lived including their current home. He passed his love for traveling and the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. He loved the water and one of his favorite places was the Rainbow River, where many family memories were made camping, kayaking, and relaxing by the campfire. He and his family vacationed every year to the mountains, primarily Georgia and North Carolina, to camp and hike to waterfalls. He traveled through much of Europe, camped in an RV across Mexico as well as up to Nova Scotia, and cruised numerous times to Alaska and the Caribbean Islands. He was an active member of Transfiguration Catholic Church and later, Holy Cross Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents Augustin and Maria, sisters Vera (Tony) Misany, Anne (Joe) Orlická. Tony is survived by his wife Patricia, sister Gita Sulkova, daughter Teresa (Scott) Facey, sons Anthony and Patrick (Renee), grandchildren Patrice, Adam (Zoe), Paige (Nick), Madeline, and Anneliese. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church on September 24, 2024 at 10 am.

Papa was steadfast in his optimism and faith in others. Every day was a blessing, every family gathering was a cherished memory, and every setback was an opportunity to grow and learn. His exuberance for living in the moment and yearning for family time even (and especially) in his later years compelled us all to stay close when circumstances might have otherwise driven us apart. Through us his legacy will live on so long as we never stop believing in the good in others and seeking to make (and archive) memories with family and friends.

Dad loved the water. He really enjoyed walking on the beach, canoeing, kayaking, and floating on the river in his inflatable boat. He really loved the Rainbow River. The water was always crystal clear. He did not like that it was cold. I have many memories of the family camping at the state park and kayaking up and down the river. In the later years when camping was not an option we stayed at an AirBnB along the river. These pictures are from our last trip were we all stayed the weekend. Many good memories.
