I just found out about Arnie's passing, and I was deeply saddened. He was a a kind, gentle, compassionate, and supportive individual and a knowledgeable and patient teacher. The world is a better place for his having walked through it, and I am deeply saddened that his life was cut short so soon. My prayers and my deepest sympathy go out to all members of his family.

I am so deeply saddened to hear of Arnies passing Marie. Although we have lost touch over the years some great memories come to mind. I especially recall the cold blistery winter night when on our way to a dance you met Arnie. Who was to know then that he would become your husband. He was such a kind intelligent and caring person. May you find comfort from the many loving joyful memories of your life together.

Our family was very blessed to have known Arnie/Mr. Elder. He taught both of our daughters, Shawna and Tracy, coached our son Chad in football, worked with our son in law, Jesse, at CUC, and was one of my coworkers at BJM from the time I started working there in 1988 until Arnie's retirement. His professionalism, dedication, and respect for everyone was second to none. Our hearts break for his loss. Marie, Ryan, and Neil, may Jesus hold your hands and be with you in this most trying time. Keeping you in thought and prayer. Donna, Greg, Shawna, and Chad Erdman, and Tracy and Jesse Kienlen

I still remember the diatonic molecules thanks to Mr. Elder's mnemonic "I bring clay to our new house". It is rare to have such a memorable teacher in one's life. I just heard about the accident and learned that the funeral had already taken place, so I could not express my sympathy to his family in person. I know how difficult this time is and want the family to know that you are in my prayers. Mr. Elder will forever hold a place in my heart as a teacher who made things fun, and who always kept things interesting. I owe my teaching career to him.

I too was saddened at the tragic and senseless loss of Arnie. Having been on staff with him when the school opened and then again as principal of BJM, I came to depend on Arnie's wisdom and wit to keep things in perspective. His love of science and his students was an example for us all. His death leaves a void in the lives of many. Marie, Neil and Ryan, take some consolation in the realization that his life and joy of living has spread around the world through his students.

Dear Marie and Family, I just heard of Arnie's tragic passing. I am so saddened by this sudden and senseless accident. I have many fond memories of Arnie at BJM as we started "our new school" and then worked together for over 20 years. Arnie always had a smile and good things to say to everyone. It was impossible not to "love" Mr Elder. My deepest sympathies go out to your family.

I was saddened to hear of Mr. Elder's untimely passing. More than thirty years ago I had Mr. Elder for several subjects, including chemistry, at Denzil high school. In an odd way, I still always remember Mr. Elder everytime I am doing the dishes due to something simple I had then learned from him - "Water is the best known solvent". It is something I always and frequently remember, including who taught it to me.

My condolences to Mr. Elder's family and friends.

What? Mr. Elder died? Oh poop, indeed!

I had the distinct honour of not only having him teach me three classes, but also to have shared a planet with an unbelievable man and an educator without peer. It would have taken substantial effort by a student to not be captivated by Mr. Elder's passion for science; resistance was futile, and I was too smart (lazy) to resist! Mr. Elder laid the foundation for my love of logic, reason, and scientific method, and how all of the previous are applicable in everyday life. There were days in class when I was amazed at Mr. Elder's unyielding patience with questions that were at times incessant. Every question was always met with the same response: Mr. Elder's undivided attention. Every time I asked a question, it felt like he and I were the only two people not just in the room, but in the universe. He would explain patiently until I understood. If I still didn't understand, there was always time after class or after hours. It wouldn't surprise me to hear of Mr. Elder taking the time to answer physics questions in the grocery store on a Saturday morning...in July...after he retired.

Mr. Elder never commanded respect, but always earned it; he certainly had mine, and still does. I am sad for the world that nobody will ever again benefit from this humble, venerable man.

I was deeply saddened by the news of Mr. Elder's passing. Arnie was a great coach, teacher, and most of all a great mentor. His enthusiasm for teaching and coaching was evident to anyone who met him, so much so that he even go through to a 'lazy piece of bantha fodder' like me and I eventually pursued a career in science. I am truly fortunate to have known him. Regretfully, I will not be able to attend the funeral, so instead I'll be having 'root beers and pizzas' in his honor tonight.

Mr Elder had this miraculous ability to engage students in topics that would otherwise put teenagers to sleep. His wit and humor, not to mention his favorite one liners, drove students to cross their fingers to see his name on their course schedule every fall. But what was most important was his obvious investment in his students. The world has lost a great man, and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this difficult time.

I was so lucky to have been taught by Mr. Elder for 2 years. Thinking of his quips from class brings more than a smile to my face, it makes me laugh. Recently at my sister's wedding shower (who graduated BJM in 2003), all who attended BJM were reminiscing about the fun we had in his class. It just goes to show the impact that he still has on students that graduated 10 years ago. I am so sad to hear of his passing, and am thinking of him and your family in this time. Hopefully remembering the positive impact he had on everyone he met brings some relief during this time.

Sincere condolences on the untimely passing of Arne. He was a terrific teacher, colleague and friend. I enjoyed having him on my staff at BJM in the 90's. Parents and students often begged to take Chemistry from Mr. Elder - his reputation as a great teacher and scholar was well known in the community - his love of Chemistry and joy of sharing his knowledge with the students, was always evident. How sad that Arne only got to enjoy two years of retirement. The outpouring of grief that we all feel is nothing compared to what you, his family must be feeling. Mr Elder was a very influential helpful and cafing teacher and friend to me. I end my very sincere condolences to Marie and heir children and extended families and friends which I know must be numerous. He was not only an excellent teacher that sparked my interest in sciences, especially chemistry, biology and pharmacology but he was also a family friend. I will not forget the football coaching with Ray Vallieu and card playing and barbeque's at Mom (Rose Reinigers' ) house. If the meal was at their trailer or house it was uzually using Elder China . Arnie was also their when I first got married and that summer I was working for his one brother and with his other brother at Memorial Gardens, Saskatoon. So I do owe Arnold for many Good things in my Life. We did stay in touch when I had Mad Science and he always talked about his boys and hockey?? ? When I heard what happened last week, I was hoping Mr. Elder would be ok. Sadly this planet has suffered a tremendous loss. He was one of the best at BJM and the only reason I even took Chemistry. He had a way with students that made them enjoy Chemistry class even if they didn't like Chemistry itself. From his chalk covered hands to his constant reference to “root beers” to his unmistakeable voice earning our attention, that one hour with Mr. Elder was always worth more than we'd ever realize. The number of former students signing this guestbook is a testament of just how much he meant to the kids from BJM. Considering how much he meant to us students, I can't imagine what his family is going thru right now with this devastating news. Please know you are in all of our thoughts.

I remember M. Elder from when I attended BJM in the mid 90's. He was always one to take the time to explain a concept or theory that we didn't understand. He was also one to say hello and give us a smile. He was one of my best teachers. He will be missed greatly.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family Mr. Elder as they now must live with your memories. You have inspired so many in the field of science and you are the type of teacher I hope my children are able to experience. I will never forget your cheery disposition, your meter stick, and your magneto motor!

We were shocked and dismayed to learn of Arnie's passing. As a teacher, he was known for caring, kindness and compassion toward his students and colleagues. His former students' recollections attest to his influence. Our deepest condolences and prayers go to Marie, Ryan and Jane, and Neil at this difficult time.

I am saddened to hear of Arnie's passing. While I only knew him as a football coach, and not as one of my educators, I always admired how he enjoyed life. Despite our team being awful, he always seemed like he was having fun. I also remember everytime I'd pass him in the halls at BJM he'd yell out "Robbie" and you knew you'd end up with a chalk hand print on your back. To the entire Elder family, he will be missed greatly and I feel grateful to have known him as he was a wonderful man.

I was fortunate enough to be taught by Mr. Elder and I am better for it.
