ARNOLD PLAZA Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 6 to Apr. 13, 2016.
ARNOLD JESSE PLAZA, 90, passed away in Phoenix, AZ on April 1, 2016. He was born in Cheyenne, WY and grew up in Chicago, Ill. He attended Purdue University where he distinguished himself as one of the school's greatest wrestlers, achieving four National championships. Arnold was the first Boilermaker to win an individual NCAA title and the only one to win four Big Ten titles (1947-50). He was inducted into Purdue's inaugural Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994 alongside John Wooden and Bob Griese and was also selected for the Helms Amateur Wrestling Hall of Fame. After graduating from Purdue he proudly served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952. Arnold moved to El Paso, Texas in 1970 and spent nearly 40 years living in La Union, a community he cherished. He was well known for his big heart and willingness to help his neighbors and anyone who needed a hand. He was instrumental in leading an initiative to bring public water lines to the La Union community. A devoted Catholic, Arnold was active at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church where he served as choir director for over 20 years. He was a teacher for 35 years, 17 in Chicago and 18 in El Paso. Students had great respect for "Coach Plaza," a firm but engaging teacher with an endearing sense of humor. Arnold had a passion for the outdoors and traveled throughout the Southwest sharing his love for camping, hiking and bonfires with his large family. Preceding him in death were his parents Theodore Plaza and Lupe Plaza; his sisters, Ofelia Plaza, Estelle, Plaza, Olga Plaza Naughton; his son, Alexander Plaza; and step-daughter, Debbie Garcia. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years Irene Plaza; his children Marc Plaza, Melissa Ryan, Andrea Plaza, Marisusan Plaza, and Arnold Anthony Plaza; his step children, Ruben, Richard, Martin, Robert, Freddy and Ray Labrado and Trinidad Garcia; 25 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their respective families. Visitation for Mr. Plaza will begin at 5 PM Sunday, April 10, 2016 in Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church, 1320 Mercantil Street in La Union where the Prayer Vigil is scheduled for 6 PM. Family and Friends will join together at 11 AM Monday, April 11, 2016 to celebrate the Funeral Mass in the same church with the Reverend Michael Cotone Celebrant. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in the La Union Cemetery where he will be laid to rest in the family plot. Serving as casket bearers will be family and friends. I'm sorry to hear Coach passed away. He was my Teacher from 1973-74 at LMS in El Paso Texas. He was a friend and mentor who maintained authority in his classroom with love and respect. He was the best Teacher I ever had.

I met Mr. Plaza on a mat during an inservice with episd in 1968-69. I was putting on a wrestling inservice and asked for a volunteer to help me with a demonstration. Well, Mr. Plaza showed everybody who the real expert was. I later found out he had been a collegiate wrestler. Mr. Plaza and I met again in 1981 when I went to Lincoln Middle School. I can only echo all the good things that have been said about him and am proud to say that we were more than colleagues, he was also a friend. My heartfelt condolences to his family and may Mr. Plaza be resting in heaven assured that all those he came in contact with are better off because of his friendship. I only wish I had seen you wrestle in college.

Your friend, Hector Munoz

Mr. Plaza,
Thank you for being a part of my life and for allowing me to be a part of yours. I will never forget your many teachings. Growing up when anyone asked me what i wanted for my future i would always respond " I want a simple life and to be happy." People were always astonished by my answer. "Dont you want to be rich or famous or have a mansion to live in?" They would ask. I would always respond no and tell them that i did not need such things to be happy. When I asked this question in front of you and Irene my answer was the same but your response was what surprised me. You simply laughed and said "Mi hijita I agree with you. Just give me room and my CIELO and thats all I need to be happy." You are the one person who understood me and who reassured me that the simple things in life are all you need to be happy. Thank you for loving me and my daughters and for you friendship and kindness towards my parents. We will miss you terribly and think of you everyday. And dont worry we will look after your CIELO. Irene we will for always be here for you. We love you both...

I can count on one hand the people that have had a profound influence on my life, and Coach Plaza was one of them. He was a great teacher, a great man, and a great human being. He treated everyone with respect and dignity and was loved and respected by all who knew him. I can still see him riding up to Lincoln Jr. High on his motorcycle! Thank you Coach Plaza for being a mentor, teacher, and friend. The world will be a little less bright without you.

I have such fond and vivid memories of Coach Plaza. He was my science teacher at Lincoln Elementary School in El Paso, Texas. He was as funny and kind as he was brilliant and generous with his time. Coach had nicknames for all of us and was tough as nails if he had to be. If we acted up too much, he would pull us up by our sideburns. In fact, my brother (who also had him for science) and I used his method to help discipline our boys. We called it "The Coach Plaza Treatment". We saw each other last in front of Saint Patrick's Cathedral before mass, some twenty years ago. What an amazing life he lived. If I can find a way to post my Facebook page, I will. I posted his obituary and the tributes are flooding in. You will be missed and always remembered. Love you, Coach Plaza.

Coach Plaza was my teacher at Lincoln Jr high school, he was my favorite. I'll never forget the times I got to ride on his motorcycle, he introduced me to frog legs...lol. My heart is hurting, but God only takes the best. May God grant your family peace at this time. God bless✝✝
