QUIMBY, Arthur R., Jr. Arthur R. Quimby, Jr., 77, of Columbia died Monday (December 6, 2010). Born in New London in 1933, he had a storied high school basketball career, leading his Bulkeley High School team to undefeated state and New England championships in 1951. Sought by many colleges, he chose UCONN where he was a standout player and still holds several school and national rebounding records. Turning down opportunities to play professionally, he pursued a career as an educator, first as a gym teacher at Windham Tech, then as principal at Ellis Tech, eventually serving as Superintendent of the Connecticut Vocational Technical School System. While at UCONN, he received his commission in the Army Reserve, and continued to serve for over thirty years, retiring in 1986 as a Colonel. A lifelong fisherman and avid golfer, he enjoyed his retirement years with family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judy; his three children, James Quimby, Kathleen Quimby Garcia, and Paul Quimby; his daughter-in-law Corinna Quimby; his son-in-law Oliver Garcia; his six grandchildren, Katie and Jessica Quimby, Alexander and Nathaniel Garcia, Caroline and Jack Quimby; and his sister Gloria Hratko. A memorial service will be held on Sunday (December 12) at 1 p.m. at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) in Willimantic. His family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Windham Technical High School Student Activity Fund, 210 Birch Street, Willimantic, CT 06226 (memo: Arthur Quimby Memorial Scholarship). Judy and Family:
I enjoyed the many years of working with Art at Central Office in the State Dept. of Education. Art always had a joke ready to go and a terrific sense of humor. His concern for the students in the V.T. school system was unparalleled. You can be proud of the years that Art spent doing good for students and staff who needed a champion to obtain funding and equipment. The basketball team in heaven just got a terrific rebounder and guard! He will be truly missed by all the many lives he touched.

Art was a true friend and colleague. I will really miss him.I believe that God needed another fisherman and golfer to help him upstairs. Judy and family, the Cheney family gives their heart felt thoughts of love and support to you in your time of grief. Art has left our family with many fond memories. Goodbye "Pard". Skip (Judy's brother) and I (Skip's ex) and our children, Nancy Martin, Cindy Duggan and Doug Marhoffer are so sorry we are missing the funeral services. We all remember all the fun the Quimby's and our family had on all our vacations together camping. They were the best times of our lives. Art was a great guy, with an unassuming demeanor and a quiet sense of humor, who kept his cool (most of the times) with 6 children, 3 dogs, spouses, brother-in-law and his in-laws around. We shall miss him tons.

The passing of Art is a heartfelt loss to his family, loved ones, friends and associates. He gave many of us who were team mates, class mates and, in fact, the entire city of New London a lifetime of unforgetable memories of the 1951 class of Bulkeley School. Thank you Art, and God bless.
