SPEECH BY AUGUST SCHELLENBERG ON RECEIPT OF THE GASCON-THOMAS AWARD OF THE NATIONAL THEATRE SCHOOL OF CANADA

I THANK THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS FOR THIS VERY SPECIAL AND PRESTIGIOUS HONOUR. POWYS THOMAS AND JEAN GASCON - THESE TWO GIANTS OF THE THEATRE WORLD WERE NOT ONLY MY TEACHERS BUT ALSO FELLOW ACTORS WITH WHOM, IN TIME, I HAD THE PRIVILEGE AND PLEASURE OF WORKING PROFESSIONALLY, AND, ON OCCASION, SHARING A 'WEE DRAM' OR TWO OR THREE - AFTER THE CURTAIN CAME DOWN, OF COURSE. IN THE 1960s THE NEWLY-CREATED NATIONAL THEATRE SCHOOL WAS A HAPPENING PLACE, AS I'M SURE IT IS TODAY. I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE WONDERFUL TEACHERS WHO TAUGHT US OUR CRAFT AND ATTEMPTED TO PREPARE US FOR A LIFE IN THE THEATRE AND THE LARGER WORLD OF SHOW BUSINESS:

- EDDY GILBERT – THE HISTORY OF THEATRE CLASS: "WOULD SOMEONE GIVE MR. SCHELLENBERG A NUDGE? HE SEEMS TO HAVE FALLEN ASLEEP…AGAIN."

- JEFF HENRY – DANCE AND MOVEMENT: "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE BATHROOM? YOU GO TO THE BATHROOM BEFORE YOU COME TO CLASS, MON. AND DON'T BE LATE FOR CLASS."

- MR. VAMOS – OUR FENCING MASTER – AT THE AGE OF 63 WAS SO AGILE, HE WOULD TELL YOU WHAT SABER CUT HE WAS GOING TO GIVE YOU, GIVE YOU A CHANCE TO PREPARE, AND STILL HIT YOU.

- MR. KIEFER – GYMNASTICS

- JACQUES KAZMA – MIME

- MARCEL SABOURIN – IMPROVISATION

- MME. VORONOFF – BALLET: "LE TORSO, MONSIEUR SCHELLENBERG, LE TORSO…"

- MUSIC CLASSES AND THE GREAT SENSE OF HUMOUR OF GABRIEL CHARPENTIER

- POWYS THOMAS – WITH HIS VERKAKTE "UNDER MILK WOOD" "LLAREGGUB, BOYO. LLAREGGUB, LLAREGGUB. DO YOU KNOW THAT 'LLAREGGUB' SPELLED BACKWARDS IS 'BUGGER ALL'? I THINK DYLAN THOMAS WAS HAVING FUN, DON'T YOU THINK?" I THINK SO, POWYS.

- JEAN GASCON – "AUGUSTE, YOUR FRENCH IS ATROCIOUS! WHERE DID YOU LEARN YOUR FRENCH?!" "ON THE STREETS OF MONTREAL, JEAN." "AH, WELL…THAT'S FORGIVABLE, I GUESS."

- AND OF COURSE, OUR WONDERFUL VOICE TEACHER MISS ELEANOR STEWART – IT TOOK ME THE WHOLE FIRST SEMESTER TO GET THROUGH THE FIRST STANZA OF THE HIGHWAYMAN. (RECITES:) "THE MOON WAS A GHOSTLY GALLEON…" "WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THE MOON, MR. SCHELLENBERG? "WELL, IT'S…IT'S THE MOON, IT'S IN THE SKY." "BUT WHAT DOES THE MOON MEAN TO YOU?" "WELL, IT CONTROLS THE TIDES, LOVERS MAKE LOVE UNDER IT, THE POETS MAKE POETRY ABOUT IT, THE SONGWRITERS WRITE SONGS ABOUT IT." "THANK YOU, MR. SCHELLENBERG. NOW TRY PUTTING THAT INTO THE WORD." YES, MISS STEWART, YOU WERE ALSO RIGHT ABOUT ANOTHER THING – YOU TOLD US THAT IT TAKES AT LEAST 20 YEARS TO BECOME AN ACTOR. YES. YOU WERE RIGHT.

MY CAREER, AS ZARA SAID, SPANS A LITTLE OVER 40 YEARS. I HAVE WORKED WITH MANY WONDERFUL AND TALENTED PEOPLE WITH AN NTS CONNECTION, NOT ONLY ACTORS BUT ALSO THOSE WHO WORK IN THE MANY DISCIPLINES SO INTEGRAL TO THE LIFE OF A PRODUCTION. WE MEET AS FAMILY – NTS FAMILY.

OF COURSE, I HAD A FAMILY, A LIFE, BEFORE THEATRE SCHOOL. I HAD A MOTHER, A FATHER, AND A WONDERFUL FOSTER MOTHER, MY COUSINS PAM AND GARY WHO ARE IN THE AUDIENCE TODAY, AND SADLY, A MARRIAGE THAT DIDN'T LAST BUT FROM THAT MARRIAGE PRODUCED A BEAUTIFUL GIFT, MY DAUGHTER SOPHIA WHOSE LOVE FOR ME AND MINE FOR HER WILL LAST FOREVER. SOPHIA CHOSE A DIFFERENT CAREER – SHE WENT INTO FINANCE AND IS HAPPILY MARRIED TO MY SON-IN-LAW ANDRE SOUMIS.

MY YEARS AT THE SCHOOL WERE SOME OF THE HARDEST AND SOME OF THE BEST OF MY LIFE. FRIENDSHIPS WERE BORN THAT CONTINUE TO ENRICH MY LIFE. THERE WAS A YOUNG ACTRESS IN THE YEAR AHEAD OF ME WHO ASKED ME OVER FOR DINNER ONE NIGHT…I NEVER LEFT. SHE KNEW A GOOD COOK – I MEAN A GOOD ACTOR – WHEN SHE SAW ONE. WINNIPEG'S JOAN KARASEVICH, ALREADY A WORKING ACTRESS, HAD COME TO NTS TO "BRUSH UP HER SHAKESPEARE" AND SHE DID, ULTIMATELY SHARING THE STRATFORD FESTIVAL STAGE WITH POWYS THOMAS AND BEING THE FIRST ACTRESS TO RECEIVE STRATFORD'S TYRONE GUTHRIE AWARD.

WE WERE VERY FORTUNATE TO SPEND THE FIRST YEARS AFTER GRADUATION WORKING TOGETHER QUITE OFTEN AND OCCASIONALLY AT OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE COUNTRY. PHONE BILLS COULD BE ASTRONOMICAL. SO, WE MARRIED. AND THE NATIONAL THEATRE SCHOOL WAS AT THE WEDDING: JOAN'S CLASSMATE SALLY BAKER WAS HER MAID OF HONOUR, AND ALAN BLEVISS, A CLASSMATE OF MINE, CURRENTLY A MEMBER OF THE NTS BOARD WHO HAS DONATED SO GENEROUSLY TO THE SCHOOL, WAS MY BEST MAN. I AM SO HAPPY THAT HE, ALAN, AND HIS LOVELY DAUGHTER LISA ARE HERE TO SHARE THIS MOMENT WITH ME.

JOAN AND I AGREE THAT OUR BEST CO-PRODUCTIONS WERE OUR DAUGHTERS REENA AND JOANNA. THEIR ARRIVAL ON THE SCENE BROUGHT GREAT CHANGE TO OUR PERSONAL LIVES WHILE THE RAPIDLY-GROWING NETWORK OF REGIONAL THEATRES AND THE EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES IN TELEVISION AND FILM WERE BRINGING GREAT CHANGE TO OUR PROFESSIONAL LIVES. WE WENT WHERE THE WORK WAS – CHILDREN IN TOW
– LIKE GYPSIES. NOT EASY, BUT WHAT GREAT MEMORIES.

THE APPLE FALLETH NOT FAR FROM THE TREE. REENA, BY THE AGE OF FIVE, HAD STOLEN THE SHOW FROM HER MOTHER IN A RAINBOW STAGE PRODUCTION OF "THE SOUND OF MUSIC" AS GRETEL, THE YOUNGEST VON
TRAPP, TO JOAN'S MARIA. THAT PRODUCTION ALSO FEATURED – IN THE ROLE OF UNCLE MAX – NTS ALUMNUS THE LATE TIBOR FEHEREGYHAZI, LONGTIME ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF SASKATOON'S PERSEPHONE THEATRE. REENA APPEARED ON SESAME STREET, STARRED IN A T.V. SERIES, AND ATTENDED THE NATIONAL BALLET SCHOOL IN TORONTO. AFTER HIGH SCHOOL SHE RECEIVED A MOREHEAD SCHOLARSHIP TO THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AND HAS CHOSEN TO USE HER MANY TALENTS AS A TEACHER. SHE MARRIED FELLOW MOREHEAD SCHOLAR RAFAEL MARTIN. THEY LIVE IN DALLAS AND WORK AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS. THEIR FIRST COPRODUCTION IS DAUGHTER SERENA, WHO WE ALL HOPE WILL BECOME A BRAIN SURGEON – GOOD LUCK!

AND SOME OF US ARE TRULY BORN TO IT. JOANNA HAD HER FIRST TASTE OF AUDIENCE APPLAUSE BEORE SHE WAS FIVE, SINGING WITH HER MOTHER AND SISTER AT FOLK FESTIVALS – NO BRAIN SURGEON THERE! JOANNA CUT HER CHOPS WATCHING US, HER PARENTS, REHEARSING AND PERFORMING. WHO NEEDED A BABY SITTER? SHE DID COMMERCIALS, RADIO, TELEVISION, INCLUDING A T.V. MOVIE IN WHICH I PLAYED HER FATHER (TYPECASTING) AND THE INCOMPARABLE MONIQUE MERCURE, A FORMER DIRECTOR OF NTS, PLAYED HER MOTHER. JOANNA STARRED AS HELEN KELLER IN TORONTO'S YPT'S PRODUCTION OF "THE MIRACLE WORKER" WHICH BROUGHT HER A DORA NOMINATION AT THE TENDER AGE OF 11, AND ALSO AS ANNE IN "THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK," SHARING THE STAGE WITH ALUMNUS RICHARD DONAT AS OTTO FRANK AND HER SISTER REENA AS MARGOT. JOANNA WORKED THROUGH HER TEENS ADDING SINGING AND SONGWRITING TO HER RESUME. HER LAST PLAY IN TORONTO WAS "AUNT HANNAH MEETS JOE RIVER" WITH DONNY ALLISON, MY CLASSMATE AND NTS ALUMNUS, PLAYING HER FATHER. OUR MOVE TO DALLAS GAVE HER THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH THE SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL OF DALLAS WHERE HER PORTRAYAL OF JULIET IN A PRODUCTION OF "ROMEO AND JULIET" SET IN THE CIVIL WAR EARNED HER THE DALLAS THEATRE CRITICS' AWARD. SHE WAS A MEMBER OF THE STRATFORD SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL FOR TWO SEASONS ALONG WITH HER GODFATHER, MY CLASSMATE JAMES BLENDICK, A 20-SEASON STAR OF STRATFORD WHO IS ALSO MARRIED TO HIS CLASSMATE MARY HITCH. JOANNA IS MARRIED TO A CANADIAN ACTOR, MONTREALER ADRIAN CHURCHILL. THEIR FIRST CO-PRODUCTION IS A DAUGHTER NAMED MIRANDA WHOM WE WILL BE BABYSITTING WHILE JOANNA, HAVING JUST FINISHED A PRODUCTION OF "PRIDE AND PREJUDICE" BEGINS REHEARSAL FOR "A CHRISTMAS CAROL."

AS FOR MY CAREER, MY WORK IS ALL OUT THERE IN CYBERSPACE, ON A VERY FINE WEBSITE WHICH MY FAMILY CREATED FOR ME IN HONOUR OF MY RECENT EMMY NOMINATION FOR "BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE" IN WHICH NTS ALUMNUS COLM FEORE ALSO APPEARED. THE EMMYS WERE A BLAST – THE FROSTING ON A DELICIOUS SLICE OF LIFE. FELLOW NOMINEE SANDRA OH – AN NTS GRAD – SENDS HER GOOD WISHES TO EVERYONE HERE AT NTS, AS DOES MY CLASSMATE WILLIAM MOCKRIDGE, WHO AFTER GRADUATION WENT TO GERMANY AND NOW STARS IN HIS OWN T.V. SHOW AND PRODUCES A GERMAN "SECOND CITY" WITH HIS ACTRESS WIFE. THEY JOINED US IN MONACO FOR THE INTERNATIONAL T.V. FESTIVAL WHICHH OPENED WITH "BURY MY HEART."

IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT IF YOU CAN COUNT YOUR TRUE FRIENDS ON ONE HAND, CONSIDER YOURSELF FORTUNATE. THE CREATOR HAS TRULY BLESSED ME, FOR TO COUNT MY TRUE FRIENDS I WOULD HAVE TO TAKE OFF MY SHOES AND SOCKS, AND THEN SOME. MY MONTREAL-BORN AND VANCOUVER-DAYS ROOMMATE, THE LATE JOHN JULIANI OF NTS AND SAVAGE GOD FAME – ONE OF CANADA'S FINEST DIRECTORS, WITH WHOM I DID SOME OF MY BEST WORK – WOULD PROBABLY TELL ME TO "STOP AT THE SHOES AND SOCKS, PLEASE!" I MISS HIM, I MISS HIM TERRIBLY. I AM HAPPY TO KNOW THAT NTS BOARD MEMBER LAWRIE ROTENBERG, MY FIRST AGENT, WHO SHARED 30 YEARS OF MY CAREER, IS HERE TODAY ALSO. I HOPE TO SEE NTS GRAD ARDON BESS SOON IN DALLAS, WHERE HIS DAUGHTER LIVES. ARDON GOT MARRIED IN DALLAS TWO YEARS AGO AND I HAD THE HONOUR OF BEING HIS BEST MAN. I'D LIKE TO DIGRESS FOR A MOMENT AND BEG YOUR INDULGENCE. I HAVE DONE FOUR FILMS WITH THIS GENTLEMAN, THE LAST BEING "BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE" IN WHICH HE RECEIVED AN EMMY NOMINATION ALSO. HE IS ONE OF THE FINEST AND THE BEST COSTUME DESIGNERS I'VE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE MONSIEUR MARIO DAVIGNON (APPLAUSE). THANK YOU FOR YOUR INDULGENCE.

I AM GRATEFUL TO HAVE MY DAUGHTER SOPHIA HERE TODAY ALONG WITH OTHER FAMILY AND FRIENDS. I AM ESPECIALLY GRATEFUL TO HAVE MY WIFE JOAN BESIDE ME, AS ALWAYS. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME TO SHARE WITH YOU MY THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THE NATIONAL THEATRE SCHOOL OF CANADA – WHAT IT MEANT, WHAT IT MEANS TO ME. TO MY YOUNG PEERS-IN-THE-MAKING – MAY YOU TOO KNOW LOVE, FRIENDSHIP, HEALTH, OPPORTUNITY, AND SUCCESS. I WISH YOU A GOOD JOURNEY AND MAY YOU
ALL WALK IN PEACE. THANK YOU. MERCI. (APPLAUSE. LOTS OF IT.)

Dear Joan, Joanna, Miranda, and Augie's beloved family. We have just heard of Augie's passing and wanted to say that our hearts and prayers are with you. When the man upstairs calls, there is no fighting it. I know, because Augie was a fighter. He was put on this earth for a reason and those of you of first nation background had someone to emulate and lead. We humble actors saw a man with little education take scripts he could barely read and create powerful characters over and over again. He was a mentor to the young and old of the first nation and to actors just starting out. Augie was one of the few men who constantly gave, paying it forward and expecting nothing in return. What he got was a legion of loyal followers and friends. Joan, I know you gave up your career to raise the girls and guide Augie's so I wish you only sweet memories and may the pain of his loss quickly subside. Sophie, Reena and Joanna I hope the pain from his loss leaves quickly as you all made him a very proud father and he was actually happy the chain of just girls ended when he got a grandson, although he loved them equally. The man upstairs has bigger plans for Augie and he knows he can count on Cookie to carry it through, so even though he will be oh so missed down here, I know he is doing a gig upstairs and the next time a bird does a nono on your head, remember,it might be Augie saying, "Don't forget, I am watching you!!!" We all shared some good times together and I felt that Augie was my brother from the first time he teased me for wearing a navy blazer at National Theatre School in the tombs of Place Des Artes that October morning in 1963. I never wore it again. "Til we meet again Schellenberg and I promise to wear something else you can tease me about, maybe my Texas hat. Ladies, grandson and husbands, or significant others my sincere condolences.

I always remember Joanna telling me when we were just kids what a great mother she has in Joan, stepping back from the limelight and focusing on being a mom so Augie could do his thing. I acknowledged that day how lucky she was to have the blessing of two loving and dedicated parents, whose generous spirit will always continue to guide you.
From my family to yours, wishing you peace and long life.

Love,

Goodbye August, I know you will do well in the next chapter of your journey. A remarkable career, a remarkable life. You really did set the bar high not just for the natives of north America, but for us all.

Our family knew August as his nick name Cookie, not many knew this over the years from my understanding, but when in conversation and talking about August with family about 35 years ago that's what everyone knew him by. August lived next door after his first marriage with his first daughter Sophie, where my Grandparents Marcel and Francis Roger would take her in and take care of her when August had to travel for work. Sophie became family, and so did August.

In one meeting about 10 years ago I had run into August and his wife Joan. At this point I went to say hi, and when he realised who I was, he turned to his wife Joan and even though I was in my mid 30's and standing around some of the greatest Native talent at the BBQ for the Canadian Film Centre in Toronto, she did not hold back saying she remembered me as a toddler and changing my diapers..

The last time was 2 years ago I bumped into August and Joan at the TIFF building, during the film festival, and the 3 of us went to lunch across the street were we played catch up on life, and discussing how he was up for a role in The Lone Ranger.

He will be missed...
P.S. August you should had gotten the role in the Lone Ranger!!

Dear Joan & Family...you are in our thoughts here in Stratford. Well we remember Auggie with smiles in our hearts from social times and joys in our minds from performances. This may be a Canadian metaphor but it's been important to us both when we've had family losses, so we share it with you: God gave us memory so that we may have roses in winters! "Augie, i called our good buddy Professor Eddy Nurse, and he said, you mean "Cookie" ..I said ya ,didn't you see him on the tube...Eddy says, Augie knew you as " Rocket" because you couldn't skate..What a blow, that was a big shock to me....because i could go on and on about the good times we had...He used to tell me about when he worked with Chuck Norris and Carl Whitters (Apollo Creed) from Rocky....His big movie was " Bury my heart at wounded knee" at the time...I told him that might help you turn the corner to be a major box office. He used to talk with me about Percy Rodrigues who did the trailer for the movie " Jaws ". On another occasion, Percy became good friends with Sydney Poitier and gave him voice lessons. Cookie you kept telling me to come down to Dallas and spend some time with you because you knew i was involved in helping student athletes obtain scholarships in Football and Basketball. I appreciate everything you did for the West End Sports association, i can't thank you enough..it's not easy for me loosing a boyhood friend like you, we have so much history together.. "Our was sitting in the barbershop and the flash came over the TV that August Shellenberg had passed away..on the wall of the barbershop, an autograph photo of August Shellenberg.. to my oldest and dearest friend,Bobby White, i will never forget the good times we had in Boy Scout Camp, and the wild times we had at the YMCA, when we were 7 years old learning how to swim. Later on you went to acting school because you where working part time at the Chez Paree nightclub and you where doing great impersonations of Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and Tony Bennett. I will never forget when you came in town to be honored by the National Theater School and i told you, you where long overdue, and you donated a cheque to help the kids from downtown where you grew up, The West End Sports Association...i told you i would meet you in NYC when you got a gig on Law & Order,as Adam Beach's father. August you will never be forgotten by me,your good good buddy, Bobby White, Montreal"

I will see Augie in every beautiful hawk and bird that soars over the lake at Maison de la Casa House. To know his spirit is in the wind and the trees and the water is a great comfort. And I will never again be able to order "Two eggs, over easy" without hearing Augie's French-Canadian take on that. His very moving death as Lear will stay with me as long as his really leaving us will.
Much love to Joan and Reena and Jo and their partners and gorgeous children,.

I have a fond memory of Augie from when we were performing at the Shaw Festival in 1973. He had accidentally interrupted my lines to him and therefore, when I continued on, decided to make funny faces at me upstage (which was where I was). I was, as it happens, difficult to corpse and so we finished the scene, but I waited until closing night to get my revenge. The trickle of blood and grime that I had previously smeared on my face I now changed into a very liberal wash of gore and dirt and, instead of addressing him from two feet away, I went nose to nose with him with my line "The men, sir, the men..." Toi my great satisfaction, he completely lost it, giggling happily for several seconds, but we completed the scene and, as we left the stage, he said, "You and me, Kelk, outside- now!" Luckily he was joking and had taken the whole thing as I had expected he would - with his customary humour.
R.I.P., Augie, it was a privilege to have known you.

I first met Augie when I was a set/props intern at Halifax's Neptune Theatre in, I think, 1967. He was lead in "The Rainmaker," the best Starbuck ever and since. Even tho' I was a "grunt," Augie was so kind to me...I had to prepare palatable food and beverages for him! He took me to a cast party and treated me with utmost respect, a true gentleman on a quite crazy night. I have never forgotten that. Always wanted to play Lizzie but life got in the way....! I will always remember him in "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee," a performance of a lifetime.
My heartfelt condolences to his wonderful family. I lost my beautiful husband to lung cancer, so I sadly share the sadness.
Blessings to all--

Please accept our deepest and heartfelt condolences. We will treasure the memories of our times together with you and Augie, and the girls, and many wonderful reflections of such an extraordinary actor and family man... and with that, August will continue to live on within our hearts, our thoughts and in our prayers. Mr. Schellenberg was so wonderful in the "Free Willy" films! Our 4-year-old daughter had just lost her Nanny after the first film came out, and Nanny had ordered her a Free Willy teeshirt. It came a few weeks after Nanny left this world. Those films comforted our daughter, Natalie, and for that we are forever grateful to Randolph, Willy and the whole Free Willy casts and crews. May God bless Mr. Schellenberg and may he be in Heaven now. We wish his family and friends comfort and peace.

His wonderful talent will truly be missed. May the family be comforted by our Heavenly Father's words at Isaiah 65:17,22-24.
