The last time I spent any quality time with my Great Aunt Auralea was during the Kohanek reunion at Fish Trap Lake in 1997. My siblings and I had not seen her for many years and it was a wonder to be reminded after so many years of just what a wonderful, warm, interesting person she was. We spent hours sitting in a group talking and listening to her stories and becoming re-acquainted.

It was an honor to have spent that time with her. That week, she touched us in a way that lasts to this day. My husband and I left that reunion having decided that if we ever had a daughter we would name her Auralea. We never had the daughter, but we honor her memory in other ways.

I saw Auralea once again in June of 2000 when I flew out to MN for Uncle Les's funeral. We talked briefly but it was obviously not the same. I will always remember her as she was at that reunion. Even at 80 she was vibrant and loving and playful.

Aunt Auralea, we all love you and we'll see you soon.

I just heard of Auralea's death last week and offer my heartfelt condolences.

Auralea was always a ray of sunshine when she would visit with us out here in California. Us kids ALWAYS looked forward to her visits, she would scoop us up and want to go out to 'play' with us ... which at first we were skeptical. "A grown up that wants to 'play'.. but she was sincere and really liked to have fun. She taught us how important 'family' was, even when we lived far from each other.

She was the one that intervened when Mom was in danger of wearing herself out trying to take care of Cleon during his long illness. She had a lot to offer since she was a care taker for so long with her husband. She convinced Mom and us girls that Dad had to be cared for in a home.

We loved Auralea and honor her life and morn her death.

God Bless you Auralea.. we love you !!!!!

Bless her soul...........

Aunt Auralea...a woman of warmth, honesty, generosity, and patience; always supportive, rich in love, laughter and a song for anyone anytime anywhere. Great memories range from weekends of my youth spent at her and Uncle Claude's house, to her post-bowling trip with friends to visit me in Hawaii where the first evening she ended up, where else, but on stage performing to the crowd in song, to more recent history of a September evening spent in memories, hugs, and laughter. It's been said that when one grieves that it must be done aloud by talking about the person and our memories of them again and again, for it is in sharing that we keep their spirit alive and heal our pain within. I will miss my beautiful Aunt Auralea forever.

It's wierd, the more you think (and hear), the more you remember. After Tara's uligy, I actually realized just how much time we (my sisters and Tara and I)spent with you. I've known you my ENTIRE life. You are just one of those people you only meet once in a lifetime. I miss you so-o much! I can't wait to see you again!! Like Bailey(my son) says,"Mom-I can't wait to die for a day so I can talk to gram Auralea again!" I know it sounds bad, but he means well. When I tell him you can't die for just a day, he says"please mom, just for a day. Then I promise, I'll wake up!". He misses you, too. They (all the great-grandchildren) just didn't get enough time. Actually, no one did. I'll see you soon enough!! I love you!!

Auralea, I will miss you dearly. You have touched the hearts of countless people from many generations. You gave me insight and history of a beautiful era gone bye.Taught us; to find the humor in good times and bad,to love, to turn our tears of sorrow into smiles, laughter and hope. Thanks for the early morning chats. Sharing your "Magic Formula" for cleaning and best bargain locations...if ones a good buy three is better. Thank you for all the memories past and present.God Bless! Love Ya!

Gram, I love you so much! There was never a dull moment when all of us grand-kids went to your house. You always had a fun project for us to do (like the clothes pin rocking chairs) or someplace fun to take us (like Banks, Riverplace, & the pool). You always made sure to keep the candy jar full which is the first place that we all ran to when we walked in the door! I want to thank you dearly for all the wonderful memories you gave me (and say sorry about bringing home the stray cat). You have such a huge heart and you have impacted so many lives around you with it. I hope that one day I'll be a wonderful grandma as you were to me!

You will always be with me in my heart forever, Gram.

Gram, The thing that stands out the most to me about you is the kindness in your heart that you gave to us grand children. I have learned this virtue from you and charish it greatly. "A hundred days had made me older since the last time that I saw your pretty face

A thousand lights had made me colder and I don’t think I can look at this the same

But all the miles had separate

They disappeared now when I’m dreaming of your face.

I’m here without you baby but your still on my lonely mind

I think about you baby and I dream about you all the time."-- 3 Doors Down. Gram, I love you with all of my heart and know that you are watching over me throughout all of the things I endure.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family. I didn't get to see Auralea too often, but when I did she was always interested in what was going on and how everyone was doing. Auralea, give my dad (Les Kohanek, Jr.) a big hug!

You were always there to help me out, and always made it better than it had to be. Whether it was early morning breakfast and cribbage before school, playing a game of 654 for pennies at home, or just sharing your stories about your outlaw kids, it was always a good time to be at Grandma's house. I'll miss your great grilled cheese sandwiches and night time drives around downtown.

Love Always,

Diane Kohanek

Mom: Thank you for helping to make the wolf tie clasp with rhinestone eyes(best in the cub scout troop, runner up because it was a father/son project and I didn't lie to the judge).. for driving me to football and baseball practice.. for driving me on my Sunday Paper Route and letting me drive the car home.. for overlooking my shortcomings and always laughing at my jokes.. for being the best mom ever.. for being an even better Grandma by showing my girls how to always find the good in people, and how to have a Grand sense for adventure and of humor.. for showing them to always be strong and loving.. but, I sure wish they wouldn't have gotten any of your driving lessons!

I LOVE YOU ALWAYS!
