Barbara McClenahan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 22, 2025.
Barbara Brown McClenahan passed away on January 18th at the age of 94. She was the wife of the late John M. McClenahan and the mother of Ann B. McClenahan, Beth McCauley, the late John M. McClenahan II, and the late David C. McClenahan. She is survived by her son-in-law, David Lewallen, daughter-in-law, Janet Amador, six cherished grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her much-loved brother, Thomas E. Clyde, his wife, Nancy Clyde, and their children, spouses, and grandchildren.

A lifelong resident of the Philadelphia area, Barbara lived in Villanova and Haverford during her married years before retiring to Dunwoody Village in Newtown Square in 2010. She enjoyed a successful career as a real estate agent, but her greatest joys came from her family and community involvement. Barbara was an active Baldwin and Agnes Irwin parent, dedicated to supporting her children's education and extracurricular activities.

For many years, she contributed tirelessly to the Altar Guild at the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr and was a proud, long-standing member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. Her passion for gardening was evident in her service with the GCA Planters Garden Club, where she was recently honored for contributions of sixty years. Known for her creativity and energy, Barbara found great fulfillment tending to her plants and gardens and sharing her knowledge with others.

Raised as a birthright Quaker before baptism into the Episcopal Church at the age of 18, Barbara's education began at Friends' Central in Wynnewood, and she later attended George School in Newtown, Bucks County, as a boarding student. She graduated from Bradford Junior College, a two-year private liberal arts women's college in Haverhill, MA, and attended the University of Pennsylvania for one year before her marriage in 1951.

Barbara's legacy lives on through her family and the many lives she touched with her generosity, dedication, and vibrant spirit. A funeral service will be held at the Church of the Redeemer on Saturday, February 1st at 11:00 a.m., preceded by a private internment.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of the Redeemer (theredeemer.org) or to BrightFocus, a nonprofit focused on the treatment and cure of macular degeneration, from which she suffered. (BrightFocus.org" rel="sponsored">BrightFocus.org).

Barbara was a member of The Planters garden club where I first met her. She was President of our garden club from 1991 -1993. A wonderful knowledgeable woman who made everyone smile. She was interesting and always interested in what others were doing. A gracious lady who will be missed.
