Bessie See Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 20, 2025.
Bessie Elizabeth See (Webster), 83, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025. Born on July 19, 1942, in Lost City, West Virginia, Bessie was the heart and soul of a large and loving family whose lives she touched deeply with her unwavering devotion and care.

The daughter of Edward Lee and Eva Webster, Bessie was one of eleven siblings and grew up surrounded by the warmth and closeness that would later define her own family life. She carried forward the values instilled in her from an early age-kindness, compassion, and resilience-and became the matriarch who held generations together with grace and strength.

Bessie shared a lifelong love with her husband, Robert Dayton See Jr., whom she affectionately called "J.R." In return, he lovingly called her "Bea." Their bond was one of deep companionship and mutual respect. Though Robert preceded her in death, their enduring connection remains a cherished part of their family's story. It brings comfort to imagine them reunited once more-perhaps fishing side by side or tending a garden together while sharing their favorite treat they fondly called "Angel Food."

A devoted mother, Bessie is survived by her daughters Patricia Sherwood (Will), Crystal Lake, and Betsy M. Hyson (Harold). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren-Mindy Brown, Bridgette Golightly, Samuel Plummer, Brandy Lake, Laci Lake, Chase Hyson, and Cam Hyson-as well as numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews who were touched by her nurturing spirit.

Bessie's siblings Janet Corbin, Sue Armstrong, and Owen "Jack" Webster survive her as well as sister-in-law Joem Webster. She was predeceased by siblings Anna Lee "Sis" Webster, John Webster, Norma Jean Funkhouser, Woodrow "Woody" Webster, James Russell "Jim" Webster, Patrick "Pat" Webster, Myrtle Christine "Chris" Webster, Carolyn Webster, and Son-in-law Marshall "Shorty" Lake.

Known for her incredible cooking skills and green thumb, Bessie was an avid gardener who took immense pride in the lost art of canning-ensuring that no one around her ever went without. Her kitchen was a place of comfort where meals were made with love and shared generously. And when the moment called for it, she enjoyed a cold Pabst Blue Ribbon with a smile.

More than anything else, Bessie lived a life rooted in service to those she loved. She was the foundation upon which many leaned-a caregiver not only in title but in every action she took. Her love for her children knew no bounds; it radiated through every jar she canned, every meal she prepared, every hug she gave.

To those who knew her best-her family-she was more than just a mother or sister or grandmother; she was home.

You were so loved mother...so loved.

May Bessie's memory bring peace to all who had the privilege to know her.

So sorry for the loss of the beloved Bessie. Pat and I visited Jr. and Bessie many, many times. We loved it. Pat would always get starts off of Bessie's plants for his garden. She always had wonderful food for us to eat. She shared many family photos with me. We loved her and Jr. so much. Love, Joem Webster
