Betty Ewing York, age 87, passed away in her home in Richmond, VA on August 7, 2024. She was raised in Stephens City, VA and was a 1956 graduate of James Wood High School. While in Stephens City, she met and married Henry Edward York. They resided in Vienna, VA for many years and moved to Winchester, VA after retirement.

Betty was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Vienna, followed by Braddock Street United Methodist Church in Winchester.

She is survived by three children, Elizabeth (Libby) Johnson of Richmond VA, Stephanie Gail York of Springfield VA, and Henry Edward (Chip) York Jr. of Richmond VA; four grandchildren, Katherine Johnson Portella, Stephen Raymond Bender III, Kelly Johnson Kroneman and Ronan Helen York; and three great-grandchildren (David Bender, Johanna Kroneman, and Ezra Kroneman). She is also survived by a sibling (Ray Ewing of Winchester VA), nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Edward York, grandchild Aiden York, and several siblings.

A memorial service will take place in Winchester at the Village at Orchard Ridge on Saturday September 7, 2024 at 2:00 p.m., followed by a scattering of ashes at the Memorial Garden at Orchard Ridge. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Blue Ridge Hospice.

Our family and the York family have been friends since the 1960´s. We lived in the same neighborhood and attended the same church in northern Virginia. Mrs. York and my mother were the dearest of friends with many common interests. As a young teen, I made extra money cleaning their house and babysitting Libby, Gail, and Chip and formed a special bond with Mrs. York. Betty York was a wonderful, graceful, soft spoken lady and a devoted Christian, now in the loving arms of God.

I grew up in Vienna with the Yorks around the corner from my family in Stonewall Manor. They were such good friends and best friends of my parents, Bill and Mary Knapp, for many years. Betty kept in touch with my sisters up until her death. May she rest in peace.

Sending much love to each of you, Libby, Gail and Chip in the passing of your beautiful mother. Our parents shared such a special friendship from the moment they met at Wesley in Vienna in 1966. Our mothers instantly became lifetime best friends enjoying serving in the church together, sewing, gardening, cooking, raising children, and sharing their love for their families and mutual friends with each other. My memories of your mother are of a smart, gentle, loving Christian woman who was full of kindness and laughter. We were blessed and inspired by your mother and will forever hold her dearly in our hearts.
