Brian House Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 4 to Jan. 10, 2024.
Brian Carter House, age 66, of Richmond Kentucky, loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, died Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital surrounded by his family. Born on August 19, 1957 in Corbin, Kentucky, Brian was the son of the late Kenneth T. and Ernestine Porter House, and the grandson of the late Ernest and Margaret Porter and Matt and Emma House. Brian shared 45 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Susan Elliott House, who he met while they were attending the University of Kentucky.

A 1975 graduate of Laurel County High School, Brian earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with high distinction from the University of Kentucky in 1978, graduating Phi Beta Kappa; Phi Eta Sigma; and Societas ProLegibus. Continuing his education, he obtained his law degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1980. Brian commenced his law practice May 19, 1981, practicing in both state and federal courts. He was awarded Martindale-Hubbell's highest AV Preeminent rating by his peers.

Brian transitioned from private law practice to become a trailblazer in the field of alternative dispute resolution. As a dedicated neutral, arbitrator, and mediator, he trained at prestigious institutions including Harvard Law School; the National Association of Securities Dealers Dispute Resolution; the National Institute for Mediation and Training; and United States Arbitration and Mediation. He was an inaugural member of the Kentucky Chapter of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals.

In 2009, he graduated from Lexington Theological Seminary. Ordained as a minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 2012, he answered the call to ministry serving as a bi-vocational minister to churches in Pineville, Middlesboro, and London, Kentucky, spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ and the message of unconditional love.

Brian's impact extended to the written word, sharing messages of encouragement and reflection through his works on topics including cancer, travel, and fiction. A life well-lived, he embraced every moment especially by exploring small towns and taking roads less traveled on his motorcycle. Brian was generous of spirit, always making time to mentor and counsel his friends, colleagues, and parishioners.

In addition to his wife Susan, Brian is survived by his daughter Sarah Catherine House, Lexington, Kentucky; son Elliott Carter House (Sydney), Richmond, Kentucky; and grandchildren Isabella House and Matthew House. He is also survived by brothers Ernest Matt House (Kim); Stuart House (Terry); and his dedicated assistant of 40 years, Jo Nell Hays (Larry), and a host of other cherished family and friends.

A memorial service celebrating Brian's life is planned for Saturday, February 10, 2024 at 1:00 pm, First Presbyterian Church, 123 Keavy Road, London, Kentucky. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am at the church.

My husband, Clay Bishop,Jr Clay County Attorney admired and respected Brian so very much. Clay became a mediator after discussing it with Brian. Everyone always had good things to say about Brian. His reputation was a great guy & mediator.
Clay loved doing mediators and Brian inspired him.

Still trying to understand the loss of this dear soul. Having worked with Brian over the years to resolve many cases, I can truly say he was a master at his craft.

Brian always had a way of making everyone feel "they mattered".

I never saw anyone fight so hard in life. He was a true mentor. Rest in peace dear friend you have earned it.
