Captain Edwin E. Killinger, USN (Ret.) died at home in Annapolis, MD, on December 18, 2016. Born in Ohio and raised in San Diego, he was 78 years old, son of John and Gladys Killinger. He departed this life in the same manner that he met all life's challenges - with humor and unflinching courage. Ed was a proud member of the Naval Academy Class of 1960, 5th Company and played football and boxed. Ed served in a variety of assignments including a tour in the brown-water navy, the riverine force, in Vietnam, was personally commended by the Vietnamese Chief of Naval Operations and awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V." He went on to command USS PREBLE (DDG-46) and USS HORNE (CG-30) and served as the Director, Anti-Air Warfare Division, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. In 2008 Ed retired as a Vice President at Northrup Grumman (Maritime Mission Systems) to spend time with his family and on the water. Ed "Captain Sunshine" is survived by his wife, Barbara, his daughter, Katherine Killinger-Lewis (Greg), three grandsons: Joshua, Jacob, and John Gardner, and three sisters: LaDonna Rischer, Betty Wyffels, and Karen Petersen. Services for Ed will be celebrated at the Naval Academy Chapel, 10:00 AM Friday, June 23, 2017, followed by inurnment at the Naval Academy Columbarium and a reception at the Naval Academy Club.

Capt E Killinger was my CO on the USS Horne from 1985-1987. He was a great commander and I worked along with him through my time onboard that vessel. May he RIP

Captain Killinger was my commanding officer on the USS Horne. He was a superb officer and an inspiring commander. He left an imprint on my life that will not soon fade. 40 years since he entered my life, he still remains a factor in who I have become. To this day,I think about Captain Killinger. His family should be proud of him. I am so sorry for your loss.
