Cari Lyn Petersen, daughter of Earl and Renee Petersen of Richland, passed away on March 25, 2009, losing her second battle with cancer. She was 42. Cari was born 1 hour and 21 minutes before her identical twin sister, Lori, on January 24th, 1967, in Pocatello, Idaho. Cari and Lori were one of six sets of twins born in Bannock County Hospital in a week's time.
By kindergarten her family had settled in Richland where she attended Jason Lee Elementary, Chief Joseph Jr. High and Richland High School. Cari and Lori, commonly known as 'the twins,' were notorious for their antics and practical jokes on their high school teachers and church leaders. Cari excelled in basketball and softball during high school and continued her athletic abilities through the duration of her life, especially her love of snow skiing.
After graduating from high school, Cari devoted her life to education and adventure. She completed her B.A. at Brigham Young University graduating Summa Cum Laude. She went on to achieve her master's degree from Indiana University and, ultimately, obtained a Ph.D. in European History, Modern Russian/Soviet History also from Indiana University. Her academic awards were numerous from Outstanding History Student to several Fellowships through Exchange Programs.
Cari's adventures took her to the Idaho desert as a master instructor for the School of Urban and Wilderness Survival. At that time, she the only female promoted to master instructor status. She served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Netherlands and completed an internship for the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki, Finland. In Cari's quest for vast learning she became proficient in Dutch, Russian and German.
Cari loved Germany and moved there in 1997. Her career pursuits included managing editor for the Journal of Molecular Medicine in Berlin. At the time of her death she was the head of the Bilingual Department and a history, geography, and English literature teacher at Babelsberg High School in Potsdam, Germany.
Cari met Roy Dickmann while in Germany and they married on February 9, 2007.
Cari is survived by her devoted sister, Lori, who cared for her in her last months and was by her side when she died. Despite their distance, Lori lives in Burbank, CA, they talked to each other every day and spent long vacations together.
Cari is also survived by Lori's daughter, Audrey, age 7, whom Cari loved as her own; also, Lori's husband, George Waite (Burbank, CA).
She is also survived by her parents, Earl and Renee Petersen (Richland), as well as her older sister Nicole (Chris) Haueter and Nicole's children Cassidy (Nick) Robertson, Maddison, and Christopher Haueter. Cari was proceeded in death by an infant brother, Earl F. Petersen Jr.
A memorial was held at Babelsberg High School on March 30th in Potsdam, Germany, and a German funeral in Berlin on April 3rd.
