Carl PEPE Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Dec. 28 to Dec. 31, 2013.
PEPE, Carl
April 1915 - December 12, 2013
With sadness, we announce the passing of a great man who met everyone in his path with a warm heart, kind smile and gentle words. You were a wonderful husband to Lucy (Lucia) (nee Felicetti), a loving father to Angela (Warren), Rose Marie, Anne Marie (Rico) and Dominic (Don), and, a thoughtful nonno to Brandan, Emilio, Carly, Gina and Isabella. You were a caring brother to your sister Mary and an attentive uncle to Paul, Helen, David and Francis. You set an example to be responsible and dedicated. Born in Cancellara, Potenza, Italy, you immigrated to Vancouver at age 14, worked as a longshoreman, along with several other jobs. You had two passions in life; boxing in the 1930's and playing hand ball at the YMCA for over 50 years. You began your tailoring career on Vernon Drive in 1934, shortly thereafter, you incorporated Olympia Tailors in the 40's. You were passionate and hard-working and developed a clientele that lasted for decades.Your store became part of the heritage in East Vancouver and this spring would have been your 80th year as a tailor. You lived your last days with grace and great dignity and died peacefully, surrounded by your loving family. Pappy/Nonno, you will be missed and will remain forever in our hearts. There will be a viewing from 6-9pm, Thursday, January 2, 2014 at First Memorial, 602 Kingsway, Vancouver. Catholic Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 am, January 3, 2014 at St. Patrick's Parish, 2881 Main St. Vancouver, with reception to follow at the Church. Burial will be at 2:30 pm, Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3789 Royal Oak Ave., Burnaby. Thank you to the caregivers on the 8th floor of Centennial Pavilion VGH, as well as, to the Vancouver Coastal Health, who provided our father with personal care for the last 2 years of his life.

Carl was one of my favourite people. I worked for Laurentide Finance at Nanaimo & Hastings from 1969-1971 and became friends with Carl. We talked almost daily about his running days with Harry Rankin, and I bought all my business clothes there for decades. Buon viaggo, Carl.

Goodbye to a great man and friend. I was a mens wear supplier and in all the time we did business he was unerringly kind, thoughtful and honest. He never raised his voice, was always calm and patient , and he exercised like a champion.
I still remember in the late 70s when we met. We would coincidently see each other on the Stanley park Seawall which both we did obsessively. In 1977 was 30 and had no idea how old Carl was, he never would say, and only today reolized he was 31 years older than me. Given his exercise ethic, I am greatly surpised.
My condolences to his children. He will be missed.

My deepest condolences to the Pepe family. Carl was a wonderful, gracious man. I first met him when I was a kid working across the street at Cunninghams drugstore as a delivery boy.. He gave me my first charge account....I was about 14 then.
Over the years we would bump into each other from time to time and then at the YMCA for several years. After I left the Y I would often see Carl on the sea wall and, of course, he always gave one the warmest of greetings. He will be missed. I am sorry that I missed his funeral service.

I have many fond memories of Mr. Pepe (pappy). Growing up I spent numerous evenings at the Pepe household. Mr. Pepe always had a smile on his face and kind words to say. He was the only person I had even known who enjoyed a warm beer. I remember the surprise the first time I saw him put his bottle of beer under the hot water tap. My sympathy to the family, he will be dearly missed. I am blessed to have nice memories of such a lovely, gentle man.
