Carmen Carroll Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 28 to Aug. 30, 2020.
Carmen Frances Chase Carroll
Sept. 11, 1931 - Aug. 16, 2020
Carmen Frances Chase Carroll, 88, of Portland, passed away Sunday, Aug. 16, 2020, due to complications from Alzheimer's and COVID-19.
She was born Sept. 11, 1931, in Elbowoods, N.D. She grew up on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota and was a proud member of the Three Affiliated Tribes.
Carmen always knew she wanted to be a nurse, and at age 17 she left the reservation to attend Bacone Indian University in Oklahoma. She later transferred to the University of Colorado where she received her RN in Nursing. Education was extremely important to her, and in her 50s she received her Master's in Nursing from the University of Portland.
While in Colorado, she met her husband, Bill Carroll. They had two daughters, Amber Lee and Kelly Jo. She was a devoted wife of 56 years, serving as Bill's primary caregiver for most of the last three years of his life. Bill predeceased her in 2009, and Kelly died in 1977.
As a military family they lived in many places in the U.S. and Europe, settling in Oregon in 1969. Outside of her nursing career, Carmen was involved in many activities that focused on her most important interests – her children and her faith. These included Sunday School teacher, school volunteer, Girl Scout leader, Bible Study Fellowship leader, plus missionary work on the Burns Indian Reservation, and also in Oaxaca, Mexico. Her faith in Jesus Christ was very important to her, diligently following Him and studying the Bible throughout her life. She was a devoted "prayer warrior" to her family and friends.
As a grandmother, Carmen was fully immersed in the lives of her grandchildren and loved them deeply. She was a very engaged grandparent, attending their many school and sporting events, taking them to local attractions, and sacrificing her bonus room for Barbie parties, playing store, arts and crafts, and the occasional dental floss spider web.
Carmen also loved nature, hiking, the beach, the Blazers, and her beloved dog, Mia Rose.
She is survived and deeply missed by her daughter, Amber (Sorensen); her son-in-law, Gordon Sorensen; her three grandchildren, Ryan (Allexa), Lauren (Roland), and Jordan; and her great-grandson, Oliver.
A private service was held at Riverview Cemetery.

Bill and Carmen were in our Bible study several years. We dearly loved them! It's been a while since we've seen Carmen (last ran into her at Washington Square). We will miss her here on earth but know we will one day have a joyful reunion! God be with her family and give them the peace only He can give! Karl & Darlene

Amber Lee, I was sad to see the passing of your mother. I knew her primarily through your dad, Bill. Years ago, I went on a mission trip with him to Oaxaca. We had several functions after that where we would get together with spouses. I would also see her at Our Saviors Lutheran church where we went at that time. She was a delightful person, always so positive and my life is better for knowing she and your dad. Mike Darcy

Amber and family we are sorry to hear of your mother's passing and extend our love and prayers to you at this time. We had known Carmen and Bill through Our Saviors Lutheran Church for many years and have many wonderful memories of them both. They were both so very strong in their faith and it just glowed from them. On some of my travels I brought back a mask to add to Carmen's collection. She was such a loving and caring person who had many friends. I had the privilege of being with Bill in the mountains around Oaxaca with Northwest Medical Teams as we helped install a water project for the native Mixtec Indians of that area. He constantly talked of the love of his life, Carmen, and his two daughters. May God continually wrap His loving arms around you and your family in your loss and we know she is with Bill and singing praises to our Lord.
