Carol Cooper Garey

Our dear mother, Carol Cooper Garey, of Tucson, AZ, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2024, at the age of 86. Born in New Jersey in 1938 to Miriam and Lou Cooper, she grew up in Perth Amboy, NJ and enjoyed a playful childhood with her older brother Rob. This is where she developed her love for writing, art, horses and New York City. Proceeded in death by her beloved husband Ira, her brother Rob, and survived by her sons, Matt and Josh, her god daughter Kristen and numerous relatives, nieces, nephews and longtime friends.

Prior to moving to Arizona in 2001, Carol spent many years building a family and a career, raising her kids and forging lifelong friendships in and around Westport, CT. Her talent for writing and passion for interior design was present throughout her career, which included authoring several books and serving as Editor for House Beautiful Magazine, along with a number of other publications.

After moving from New York City to Westport in 1973, Carol and Ira were active in the local community, attending countless sporting events in support of their sons and hosting gatherings at their home where great food, music and memorable conversations where always on the menu. Carol and Ira also loved to travel, whether it be a road trip to visit family in the Tri-State area, or longer excursions across the US and to Europe.

Their love of the Southwest brought them to Tucson in 2001 where they built a home and enjoyed peaceful time with their friends, family and beloved dogs. All the while, Carol continued expressing herself through her love of art, particularly writing and painting. A stellar athlete, Carol retained her love for watching sports, particularly the US Open and Wimbledon, as well as her allegiance to the New York Yankees and Giants.

Carol left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered and the family encourages you to celebrate her life by continuing to the find the joy in yours' by making memories with friends, family and loved ones.

A private celebration of life will be held at a future date in Westport, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society are encouraged.
