I found out a couple years ago but just found Carol's obit. We were at St. Augustine's College (University) at the same time. She was on her way out the year I came in. I admired Carol a lot. I thought she was such a graceful lady. I'm so happy to know that she got to do at least one thing she wanted to do in life. I saw the movie DOAMBW and caught her in one of the scenes and went nuts. Now that I've found other movies she's been in and I'm going to look at them. RIP Carol. I'm so sorry I'll never get to see you in even more movies. You were a great lady and so kind to this freshman.

You crossed my mind tonight when an instructor walked into my office as I saw "True Colors" pop up on my caller ID, and he then mentioned Kenny Leon, and said he remembered Carol. I told him that you taught at Clark when I was student there back in the late 80s. Our conversations led to your always ready smile, your ability to turn anyone into an actor, you in character on stage and screen, and your keen discipline in the craft. Ok, so I said it ... and what fond memories I have of meeting you in the halls of CC/CAU! Thank you for your light, Carol.

I want to express my condolences to the family of Carol. I attended Saint Augustine's College where I had seen Carol in many of the plays there. I had only known her for a brief time. I came in 1973 and she was graduating in 1974. I'm really just heartbroken right now. I'm just finding out about her death, and I am truly sorry.

I saw Carol Mitchell act many times on stage and was never disappointed. One could always count on her performances to be delightful. How sad that she has departed from us in what we would have hoped to have been her best years. Still, she leaves a legacy that will long be remembered among those who had the privilege of seeing her act.

It is rare that divinity visits the earth in the form of a human. And no matter how much you tried to disguise yourself , you still looked like an angel. I have so many reasons as to why my heart is heavy from your passing but I am rejoicing for your transition into the next relm( I know that's the way you would have wanted). It is because of you that I am who I am today. I am so thankful to have learned so much from you and I will truly miss you. Everything that I do in this indusrty is in rememberance of the mother that you were to me. You are deserving of every accolade and kind word that has ever been uttered about you and futhermore, you embodied the human spirit at the height of enlightenment. I truly love you and I want you to know that your "good son" will be applauding as you take centerstage in that heavenly production. "Upward and Onward"

January 29, 2009

Truly my heart and soul has grown deep like the rivers, when I received the news regarding the transition of my former teacher, sister, and mentor, Carol Mitchell-Leon.

I remember the early 80's being a young bright-eyed student at Morehouse College performing next to Carol in Clark University's production of "Ain't Suppose To Die" with Bill Nunn, Ed Billups, Jonathan Peck, Derry Glenn, Denise Thimes, Michelle Benjamin, Scott Coleman and so many others. (Of course the play was directed by the great, Joan Lewis). What a historical moment for me and what a time. What a time!

I remember watching Carol's performance with Jomandi Prods., in "Buddy Bolden Blues" to her stunning work in "Agnes of God" (opposite Joan Lewis at Clark Univ) along with so many other wonderful performances in the Atlanta Theatre Region--it would take a documentary film to capture the essence of her amazing theatre work and contributions to the Atlanta Arts Community coupled with the impact this "gentle spirit" had on her colleagues, friends and students around the US and abroad.

I remember the 90's, when Carol and I would have lunches around the city of Atlanta while I was working on "In The Heat of the Night" (She was so thrilled that her former student was working). We would simply meet for lunch and just "BE."

I remember NOW and ALWAYS to continue to THANK YOU, CAROL MITCHELL-LEON for letting me just "BE."

So, my dear Carol, welcome to the fold of the ancestors who will embrace you and hold you in their care. Remember to say hello to our dear brother, Lamar Alford; our sister, Eartha Kitt; and please remember to sit next to Alvin Ailey so he can show you the updated version of the special ancestrial welcome dance which is now called, "Carol's Suite"

Until then, let it be easy and simply REST and just "BE."

Always,
Charles Reese

Dianne Turner-Whitt

January 26, 2009

First of all I extend my condolences to most especially to Carol Mitchell-Leon’s one and only sibling her sister; nieces, nephews and cousins , friends, colleagues, former students and associates whom she met as she journeyed through this world that we all know is not our home. Having lost a sister there is no greater pain. It’s right up there with the loss of a child and /or parent.
With deep sorrow I Dianne Turner-Whitt, Class of 1975, St. Augustine’s College, Raleigh N.C. and dorm mate (room 207-Delaney Hall) was saddened to learn of the passing of fellow classmate Carol Mitchell-Leon. Meeting her in 1971 along with her roommate, childhood friend and neighbor from Philadelphia, PA, Carolyn Faye Harrell –Reid, Delaney Hall was probably never the same. Faye and Carol were inseparable. With their theatrics, there was never a dull moments in the freshman in 1971, when we all got in trouble while attending a staged séance to call back Dr. Martin Luther King and the Delaney Sister whom we later learned had not passed away;(being from a farm in Chesapeake VA and other dorm mates who were from the country we didn’t know any better-it was very believable); sophomore dorm, Baker Hall or the senior dorm, which culminated with all of us graduating in 1975. As we moved on into our professions, marriages, rearing children, some of us were not in touch as often as we had pledged to be. However, as expressed by many at class reunions and in phone conversations, those years at the “Aug” were some of the best and memorable years of our lives. As Carol’s passing has come just days as we enter a New Year, 2009, why not resolve to do some of the things we promised each other on that warm Mothers Day in 1975 when we parted company, to keep in touch even if it’s once a year, class reunions etc.
And to you, Carol’s beloved sister: Please know that you are loved and may you find peace and joy when you remember the wonderful times you and Carol enjoyed under the loving guidance of your mother, who is no longer with us. Know that your mom and Carol are together and are watching over you and your children. Much Love:
Dianne Turner-Whitt, St. Augustine, Class of 1975

Carol was one of the brightest lights, sweetest women, and most compelling actors I had the pleasure to work with during my 16 years of working in theatre in Atlanta. Truly she was extraordinary. And she was a graceful, gracious person, one who always made you feel like it was an honor to be in your presence when you knew good and darn well it was the other way around. I don't even know where to begin. All I can say is that I love you so much. You were much more than a professor - you were our mother away from home. So loving, so gentle; yet demanded excellence from all that you taught & directed. I will never be disrespectful to the teachings you blessed me with because you definitely kept it real. One of my favorite authors wrote, "Do not be dismayed at good-byes. A farewell is neccessary for those who are to meet again. "This garden don't look like its ever gonna grow...dag" I met Carol when I was somewhere around 8 years of age after my mom put me into the Atlanta Street Theatre. I ended up in the program by chance after running away from day camp. I feel it was destiny that I met Carol because I acted within the Atlanta Street Theatre and for years after that to include playing Raynell in Fences alongside her. I can't believe she has passed. Words can't express my sadness and sorrow. I can only imagine that she is headed to stage right in heaven. Carol you are loved and will be missed.

I am truly saddened to learn of Carol's passing. She was a mentor and a friend. She surprised me once with a gift ... a writing class, I had broke my wrist just before the class was scheduled to begin, with wrist and hand in a cast, I showed up at Carol's office to show and tell her why I would not be able to attend the class, she was not amused or sidetracked by that, she looked at me (as only Carol could) and asked, "Is that the hand that you write with in a cast?" I said, "Yes." She studied me with that 1M watt smile and said, "Well you better learn to write with the other one, cause, you are going to take the class." I am sooo glad that I did and I am sooooo happy to have known Carol. To her family and loved ones, rejoice, for we all the better for having the chance to love and to have been loved by Carol.
Thank you Carol. I love and miss you much.

I was very saddened to hear of her passing. I had the pleasure of working with her during my years at Clark Atlanta University. She was a warm and personable professional. The university was fortunate to have her as a member of the family and she will be greatly missed by all of us.

I never knew her personally. But she was a great actress. May GOD keep her family and friends comforted during this time of sorrow.
