Obituary

Carol A. Van Etten (nee Hartford), loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away on December 22, 2023. She was born on September 17, 1942, in Chicago, IL to the late Robert and late Ann Hartford. She was raised in the Roseland neighborhood then moved with her husband Gerald to Country Club Hills, IL to raise their family, she then settled in Homewood, IL.

Carol is survived by her daughters Christine Cotter (The late Bernard) and Cathleen Hofsteadter, grandchildren Charlene Ruehl (Alex), Gerald Van Etten, Shannon Cotter, and Elena Ziemer, great-granddaughter Evelyn, Daughter-in-Law Florenza Ziemer and Son-in-Law Norbert Ziemer. She is also survived by her brother Robert Hartford (Sally).

Carol was preceded in death by her beloved husband Gerald Van Etten, son Mark Van Etten, grandsons Kevin Hofsteadter, Giancarlo Van Etten, Robert Hofsteadter Jr., and son-in-law Bernard Cotter.

Carol attended Fenger High School and dedicated 51 years of her life to working at Jewel Food Store in Homewood, IL. She was a dedicated and hardworking employee, known for her friendly demeanor and commitment to customer service.

In her free time, Carol enjoyed spending time with her family, shopping, lunching with friends, working in her Beautification Award winning yard, dog sitting and bringing donations to the South Suburban Humane Society. She had a special place in her heart for animals and loved visiting with the dogs at the shelter.

A private service will be held to celebrate Carol's life. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Carol's memory to the South Suburban Humane Society. Her kindness and compassion will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Carol was a wonderful sister in law. She was kind and gentle. My best memory is when she had ask me to be Godmother to her daughter Kathy also first time I meet little Chrissy. She is now with Gerry and her cold and grandchildren. She will be missed.
