Carolyn passed away at home on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014. She was born Aug. 25, 1949, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to D. Wendell Hatfield and Helen Memmott Hatfield. After graduating from East High and Westminster College and following a stint with VISTA she found her lifetime passion of nursing. She returned to Westminster to obtain her Registered Nurse certification and practiced with distinction and compassion at the Primary Children's Hospital in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for many years. She also served at LDS Hospital before moving to Park City, Utah, in 2002 to be with her husband Rick Russell, who will be forever grateful that she said, "I do" on Nov. 8, 2003. She skied and rode horseback, to great pleasure, right up until the week of her death. To see her interact with children, healthy or ill, was to see true beauty in action. Carolyn was always a nurse in her heart and soul. It was in her DNA to offer compassion and help to anyone who needed it. She was an extraordinary human being, and a great character with humor and grace. Many, many friends will miss her for a long time.
Carolyn is survived by her husband Rick Russell (Park City), brother and sister-in-law Paul Hatfield and Karen Cordner (Salt Lake City), brother and sister-in-law Robert Hatfield and Sharon Carlson (Mill Valley, California), goddaughter Sarah Jane Dee (Salt Lake City) and Boomer, Nikki and April -- latest in a long line of loved and pampered kitties.
Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E So. Temple in Salt Lake City. Friends may gather at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers a small donation in Carolyn's name to the National Ability Center Equestrian Program or your favorite charity would be appreciated.
Celebration of Carolyn's life will follow the service at 7742 Oak Shadow Circle (3400 East) off Bengal Blvd.
