Catherine Woodburn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 18, 2018.
Catherine Woodburn, 21, geologist, astronomer, collegiate rower, coach, costumed superhero, and artist, passed away unexpectedly of a stroke on Sunday, November 18, 2018 in Boulder, CO. She was born on August 16, 1997, the middle daughter of Sarah and David Woodburn. Her bright and energetic light will be sorely missed by family and friends. Catherine was the quintessential middle child, the family peacemaker; she was empathetic, nurturing and very loyal. Sandwiched between two sisters, she was the warm bonding force of girl energy. These caring traits she embraced wholeheartedly in her young adulthood, helping coach "her girls" on the St. Louis Rowing Club novice team, successfully building self confidence in these young women. She was a lover of all dogs and had a powerful bond with her adored pup, Teddy. Catherine learned to appreciate and nurture all growing things, likely the only undergraduate to plant bulbs and tend hanging baskets at an off-campus house. C.C. was a curious and passionate student of nature. Even before studying geology and astronomy at CU-Boulder, she was fascinated by the world around her . She preferred the "dotty roads" on AAA maps that meander and make a trip more interesting. She loved hiking and when adventuring, collected enough rocks and minerals to create her own personal geology museum. Not only did Catherine wonder and appreciate the beauty of the world around her, she was passionate about creating her own beauty-- Catherine was an artist. She painted fearlessly, digitizing and sharing over a hundred of her original works in charcoal, watercolors, and oils on Instagram. Moreover, Cat was immersed in the mostly-neglected craft of sewing. She imagined, created and modeled fabulous costumes while only once relying on a pattern. A 2015 graduate of New Trier High School, Catherine attended Georgia Tech and was currently enrolled at the University of Colorado - Boulder, where she was a member of the varsity crew team and geology club. Memories of Catherine shine as a beacon in the hearts of her family. In addition to her father, David, and mother, Sarah, her beloved sisters Elizabeth and Margaret, her spirit will be remembered by her grandmother, aunts and uncles, and the many cousins that she and her sisters adore. A Celebration of Life will commence at 2:00pm on December 8 at the Winnetka Congregational Church, 725 Pine Street, Winnetka, Illinois. Holiday festive attire is welcomed. In lieu of flowers and in honor of Catherine's love of the outdoors, memorial donations are suggested to the GG Endowment Fund of the Colorado Trail Foundation http://www.coloradotrail.org/

Katherine and a bunch of us geologists traveled across rivers, up and down canyon walls. She was experiencing new adventures that brought us all great joy to share the memories with. A kind loving person and may she rest peacefully.

I didn't know Katherine very well but I do remember going to church with your whole family for many years and knowing the Woodburn girls as smart and kind, and always friendly to everyone. RIP Katherine, you are missed.

While I did not get to know Catherine as much as I would have liked, as President of the CU Geology Club (2018-2019) I was always blessed with her bright presence during club meetings and events. Like all of us fellow geologists she was bright and enthusiastic about geology and Earth Sciences and she will always be missed and remembered by our community.

My favorite memories of our cousins were playing games during the holidays. We would always sit at the "kids table" then adjourn early to play games. When Catherine was really young we played the Game of Life on my computer (pictured). Later we would play Catch Phrase and I learned how to play The Settlers of Catan from Ellie, Catherine, and Margaret.

More recently we were out at the farm house for a holiday and it was unseasonably warm. We were all older but decided to play "kick the can" like we used to when we were really young. I'm not sure Ellie, Cat, and Margaret ever got to play it at the farmhouse before that. We went outside in the dark and had a ton of fun playing this version of tag. I think Cat really liked it as she could run and get fresh air.

In my memories of playing with Cat she is my younger cousin but at her memorial I learned what a talented artist, great athlete, and kind friend she was. I am so proud of her accomplishments.

I remember Catherine often but especially when I see rowers on the river in Austin nearly every day, when I do yoga because I remember she enjoyed it and was the most "limber" of all the cousins as the Woodburn aunts and uncles would say, and when I go to Marvel movies.

Thinking of her especially today and sending love to Sarah, David, Ellie, and Margaret.

Love,

Amy

Catherine and I rowed together at Georgia Tech. My junior and senior years were pretty tough for me. Rowing during those years was difficult for me mentally and I was often very withdrawn and in a generally bad mood. But whenever Catherine was in my boat, she was a ray of sunshine. I couldn't help but laugh at her antics throughout practice. It was beautiful to see someone work so hard AND play/laugh so hard, no matter what.

I send all my love to her family and friends. She is so loved and missed.

I was reminded when I went out to look for meteors last night (too cloudy) of how C was soooo excited about seeing the BSO perform The Planets when she was in Boston for The Charles. Talked it up to her teammates and sat on the phone for ages trying to get tickets to the sold out show. I think that she was just as excited about that as she was about racing. Now she has a front row seat to the Universe.

Dear Woodburn Family,
Like the many friends and family that have written here, I am finding it difficult to compose words to adequately convey the sorrow felt over the loss of Catherine. The memorial service was a beautiful tribute to a wonderful young woman, and I was moved by the letters that you wrote which were read by the pastors. As Catherine's teacher (Dance Lab), I was consistently impressed by this student who showed so much love and compassion for her classmates. Despite the sometimes intense workload at the school, I never heard her complain, and her passion for the arts was evident daily. She was a mover, in class, a quiet powerhouse. May the memory of this lovely soul keep you strong throughout your lives.

I am so sorry to learn of your loss. I remember Catherine as a sweet, kind, clever little girl who was a friend of my son in Hubbard Woods School. She grew into a beautiful, accomplished woman who will be missed by all who knew her. My prayers go out to her entire family.

I remember this little girl. She was quite and very purposed in her actions. Much like my youngest son with him she shared elementary school classes with and played with on the playground at Hubbard Woods school. It is with great sadness that I receive this news. My wishes and condolences to the entire family. She will be missed.

My name is Caroline Hofmann and I met Catherine this year at Nan Desu Kan in Denver, CO and I really enjoyed interacting and visiting with her. We got to talking about nerdy things as well as CU Boulder, as I had gone to school and graduated from there. Although I did not know your daughter very well, meeting and talking with Catherine greatly impacted me and it was one of the positive things I took away from this year's Nan Desu Kan.

(Please accept my sincerest condolences. On this sad occasion, we grieve with you).

I'm a so sorry for your loss. Catherine was an incredible, kind, and hilarious human being. Catherine and I spent years on NTRC together and she always made everyone smile. When someone was without a friend or looked sad, Catherine helped them. She was one of the rare human being who intuitively knew what was going on with others. As I am saddened by her passing I remember what a remarkable young women Catherine was. I'm forever thankful I had the opportunity to be a small part of her life. I know your watching over all over us from heaven. Love you,
Laura
