Coach Walter Yates Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 2, 2019.

Walter Yates, Sr. was born on July 6, 1940 to Douglas Yates and Girty Edwards Yates in Shepherd Texas. He and his family moved to Houston, Tx. when he was 7 years old where he attended Bruce Elementary, E.O Smith Junior High and later Phillips Wheatley High School where he was a 1960 graduate. He was a three year varsity basketball letter winner at Wheatley, playing for the legendary Colin Briggs, winning three state championships. He earned a full athletic scholarship to attend Pan American College, where they won the 1953 NAIA National Championship, and were National Runner up in 1964.

Upon graduation, he was hired as in assistant coach at his alma mater, Pan American College, and in 1966 was hired to teach and coach at E.O Smith Junior High, in the Houston Independent School District as an assistant to the legendary Frankie Brazos. In 1968, he integrated HISD, by becoming the first black head coach at a then predominately white school. He coached at Davis for 17 years, before taking over the head coaching duties at Madison High School, in 1985. In 1996, he was drawn back to the north side of town, and the Fifth Ward Community to teach and coach at Kashmere High School, until his retirement in 2007.

Coach Yates won 997 games in his 42 years as a head coach (997-326), however, more importantly to him, was the countless number of lives that he touched in a positive manner along the way, as a mentor and father figure to the many young men that has neither in their lives.

He accepted Christ at an early age, and in 1976 joined the Yale Street Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late John T. Holcomb, Sr., where he serves as a Deacon for more 30 years until he could no longer serve due to illness.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents Douglas and Girty Yates, sisters Leola Adams, and Ann Yates-Jordan, brothers Guy Yates, Harold Yates, and Samuel Yates. He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Mary Louise Yates, daughter Alisa Yates Boutte, son Walter Yates Jr., and adopted son Calvin Rice Sr. He also leaves two brothers Lee Otis Yates (Inez), David Yates (Carolyn) and one sister Gwen Ray (Ron) eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and great friends.

Dad,
This is my very first time looking at all the kind words from the many people that left expressions on this page! Man I'm still missing you like crazy and not a single day that goes by that you have not been in my thoughts. Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I shed a tear, but your life lessons will NEVER be forgotten. Although I am broken by your absence, I am doing my best to move on, honor your legacy and make you proud! I Love you Pop, and I miss you. Continue to Rest in Power. Until we meet again.

As the days roll by and I struggle to get to my "new normal", I am reminded of the many lessons that my dad taught me and the words of wisdom that sustain me to this day. I miss my daddy so much but I know that he lived out his purpose here and he is resting in Jesus! Until we meet again, I will always strive to live a life that will honor my earthly father as well as my heavenly father. I thank God for a magnificent daddy and a blessed life.....Good night daddy, I will see you in the morning......

I will always remember that special smile, that caring heart and that warm embrace that you gave us. I watched you love and take care of Granny and treat like the Queen that she is in good and bad times. I take comfort in knowing that no matter what, you will always be with me. Most people misunderstand me but I could always talk to you about anything and you would encourage me. I will never forget the lessons that you taught me and I will always keep you in my heart. You were my best friend and my heart is broken. I will always love you Paw Paw. I can find comfort in knowing that you are no longer suffering and to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. This is the hardest thing that I have ever had to do but you taught me to stand strong. Rest in Jesus my guardian angel....Until we meet at Jesus' feet, I will love you with my whole heart. January 8, 2019

Papa or Ole Coach,

I can go back to ages of 3 to 30 where I stand today with gratitude for the love u shared with me over the years while encouraging me to pass the love on to so many others. I'm also thankful for the many blessings & lessons, in particular, "the only time I can remember u actually getting ahold of the softest part of my body...it was one of those annual weeks in the summer when Pnut & myself would spend with u & Granny in Houston & we have our entire week planned out from TC Jester Pool on Monday, Movie Theater on Tuesday, Horseback riding at Uncle Harold on Wednesday, Hooping ALL day on Thursday & night school at Sam Houston High School in the evenings, to the famous SPLASHTOWN on Friday- well, this particular year I couldn't have been no older than about 5 or 6 years old resembling that knucklehead great Grandson of yours sitting over there, it was time to go, we had played, slid down the slides, rode the rides on our tubes, snorkeled in the pools, the whole 9 yards, & was in the wave pool working us up a good ole nap, unknowingly. What I also didn't know I was working up was a spanking I'll NEVER forget LOL, we were headed out of the shallow end of the pool to the lounging area & I heard that siren, at the time as a squirt that could only survive in water to my chest, I jolted back in that pool & thought I was headed to the deep end, little that I knew, I almost thought I was taking an earlier than expected appearance to meet Our Creator the way u snatched me from them waters & wore me out in front of everybody & anybody that knew u knew u meant business but u had a way of being gentle & doing it without embarrassing a kid. Therefore, this incident was one u believed I needed to really pay attention too...u shared with me while crocodile tears flowed down my cheeks, Grandson, I LOVE U, I want u to know that in your life u have 2 choices, u can chose to do the right things & prayerfully u will live to be old & ugly like your papa or u can make the wrong choices & your days will be cut short, u don't want your days to be cut short now do u, I responded with the 5 year old sobbing No sir so he wouldn't put nothing else on me LOL, & he responded good answer Grandson because if u would've gave me any other answer, I was gone jump right back on ya LOL." I didn't fully get it then besides when it's time to go, it's time to go but I think I finally got the values u were instilling in Pnut & myself at that time. If u go about this life the Godly way & keep God 1st in everything you do while making the right choices, your days on Earth will be remembered by your great work & your love you shared will be everlasting love to bring joy to many before & after our time here in Earth.

Rest Up Ole Coach,

All love from favorite grandchild LOL

Imma put that secret press you learned me into action here soon as well, keep watching over me .

Coach Walter Yates, Sr. established an enduring legacy of service and dedication as he coached his scholar/athletes on the basketball court and in their lives. He stood as a solid father figure for so many of these young men and knew the importance of teaching them timely life lessons. As he makes his Heavenly Transition to Everlasting Glory, we offer sincere condolences to his family. Rest in Heaven, Coach.

What kind of coach was coach really, basketball or life? How about both. I did not actually have the ball skills to play on the team at Jefferson Davis, however coach invited me to sit on his bench of life which showed me how to serve without donning a uniform. He entrusted the responsibility of the teams main fundraising efforts to a 15 year old and role as the teams statistician(bookman). His quote at a family gathering regarding money sticks with me today, some folk who have received a loan from me can thank coach Yates.

Because he trusted and saw my life's potential beyond the wall's of Jefferson Davis, his impact on my life is immeasurable. the successes that I have in my career and life, can be traced back to two rooms where coach Yates ran his practices. The popcorn room and gymnasium at Jefferson Davis High School.

As I conclude tears stream I as type the ending of this message as I think about how life comes full circle. That circle is family, coach was mine. To my amazing, strong willed, dedicated and determined, first cousin Mary Louise, you are the storybook wife. You persevered and may the Lord continue to give you strength.

"Do all you can why you can, and can all you can't!" "You can make something of yourself" --Walter Yates, Sr. Those are the words that remained vigorously in my thoughts as I moved from a boy to a man. It has been vital to my success as a professional educator. It was shared some years ago, however, the sentiments remain at the root of my everyday activities. You have been a great beacon light for me. That light has led me in the right direction. That light will continue to burn as I hold on to those moments that we shared, particularly, in one on one conversations. Your wisdom has been planted in my soul. I love you, Pops!
