Constance Wood Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 23, 2025.
Vero Beach - Constance (Connie) Craig Wood passed away peacefully in her home, on August 19, 2025. Connie was born on November 13, 1932, in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Alan D. and Faith Wirth Craig.

Connie grew up in Falmouth, Massachusetts, and graduated from Laurence H.S. in 1950. She attended Mt. Holyoke College, in South Hadley, Massachusetts, was an active member in her class, majored in English Literature and graduated in 1954. Connie shared a love of sailing with her father, and during the summers, helped run the family hotel, the 'Oak Crest Inn,' located at the top of the hill in Falmouth Heights.

A philanthropist, Connie began her work with the Junior League of Morristown, where she was an active, longtime member. Connie's biggest philanthropical pride was her involvement with the Family Service organization, serving as an active member of Family Service of Morristown in the 1970s and early 1980s, before becoming its President from 1982-1986. She was a board member of Family Service's Mid-Atlantic Region, serving as its President from 1988-1990, and went on to serve on the Board of Family Service of America through 1994.

Following a dream of her husband, Bob, together they were instrumental in creating the idea and incorporation of the pirate ship, the 'Scorpion,' into the children's area of McKee Gardens in Vero Beach, Florida.

Connie enjoyed golf and needlepointing, was active in a number of garden clubs and book clubs in towns where she lived, and was a member of the Colonial Dames of America.

Connie was recently pre-deceased by her husband of over 70 years, Brison Robert (Bob) Wood, and is survived by her sister, Mary Lee (Craig) Dehmel, her son, Peter Craig Wood and his wife Margaret, daughter Wendy Wood Schlosser and her husband John, grandchildren Christopher M Wood and his wife Kajal, Jessica Wood Johnson and her husband Trent, Trevor Craig Wood and his wife Alexandra, Sara V Schlosser, Kerry L Schlosser and her wife Taylor Murray, Robert N Schlosser, great grandchildren Caleb M Wood and his wife Erica, Cameron A. Wood, Rebecca E Wood, Carter H Johnson, Isabelle E Johnson, Jack T Wood, Ava L Wood, and great-great grandchild, Caroline S Wood.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 15th at St Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church, followed by a Celebration of Life reception, for both Connie and her husband, Bob, at the Moorings Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to McKee Botanical Garden (mckeegarden.org), 350 US Highway 1, Vero Beach, FL 32962.
